I guess carfax gleams whatever the mileage you had from the last time you had your truck serviced at the toyota dealer. If someone entered your mileage wrong...its the likely reason. Garbage in garbage out.

I think this has been figured out. A few months ago my trucks battery died, I get free towing with my insurance and it was due for scheduled maintenance. I had my truck towed to the dealership but called them to let them know if was coming. They started a service report at that time and entered 20,000 miles on the report as they did not have the truck yet and did not know the mileage. After getting done with my truck they updated it to the actual mileage. Apparently Experian misread the invoice and entered 20,000 miles. They have submitted a request to have it updated and I just got off the phone with carmax, they can see the change has been submitted and corrected. Now they are rerunning my appraisal. Fingers crossed it comes out like it did before and I make money on this deal.

This is actually a really easy fix, I've been buying cars for dealerships for sometime now and this is something that i run into quite frequently. 99% of the time it is an incorrect data entry on behalf of the 3rd party. This can be remedied by submitting a report to the company that provides the report, with it being Carmax it would most likely be AUTOCHECK. I was a buyer for them for years and that is the reporting system they used at the time. Just upload a picture of the current ODO reading to autocheck and they should be able to take care of it.

Its typical Ca stuff and why it is so frustrating to live here. I have 2 cars with a open airbag recall for the last couple years and not a wimper from the DMV. Both my FJ and Tundra have open fuel pump recalls, lock it down, dont let that guy renew his registration.

Carfax is like credit scores. It has no connection with reality. If you know how you can manipulate it to your advantage. Pretty soon carfax improvement companies will be showing up.

Have you tried telling them that your Tacoma identifies as having the recall performed?

I had a 2002 Dakota before my Tacoma. It was possible to change the odometer by removing the 8 pin EEPROM IC in the dash and reprogramming it. I never did it, but found a YouTube video and someone installing a new gauge cluster and setting the odometer to what was on the old cluster. It was surprisingly easy to do if you knew what you were doing. It's probably much harder on newer vehicles.

While you are waiting; doesn't hurt to get quotes from some of the online companies i.e. Carvana, Vroom, Shift etc. I found selling online where they come to my house even more convenient than the process I went through selling to Carmax.

I did, but thanks for the advise. Carmax was about $2,000 higher than the rest

It can be done on some vehicles, i knew someone who paid big bucks to roll his lease back on a Subaru, he was about 35k over his mileage, serviced himself or never had the dealer do any work so vin was no recorded. NO idea what was involved

Reminds of this scene from 1980, just a bit more prehistoric era of vehicles...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LufEm4aeIzk

    Somewhere hot, flat and brown.
believe it or not, yes. It’s happening. Maybe not as prevalently as in the past but it’s still a thing. Rollback, wash title, done.
There was a fairly sizable ring of odometer stomping dealers in upstate NY (I think) arrested about two weeks ago for this.

Op, you have a unique set of skills. How much do you charge to roll back odometers? And, not to tell you your business, but this thread probably belongs on the dark web.

Technically you’re correct however they are not rolled back, they are “re-calibrated” and this is there to allow repair or replacement of dash components.

    There is ALWAYS a way.

Yearly DMV inspections place mileage on sticker as well as report it.

not saying it happens to tacomas but blower motors for car hvacs have caused vheicle fires so thats probably thier reasoning?
