Hey guys just a quick question. If I install oem tailgate actuator will it disable my factory bed lights. I think I saw it somewhere one time that it uses the pin for bedlights to operate the lock.
    Thanks!

If you are talking about the Toyota OEM version, it ties in to the distribution block for the door locks that is behind the front passenger side kick panel, not your connector behind the tail light assembly that you use for the bed lights. Can't see any way it would interfere with the bed lights. Be careful when ordering. There is a SB and LB version. This is a good video on the installation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ejq_Y6OjakE

Agreed! If I wasn't too old and too fat to be crawling around under my truck and didn't have the mechanical ability of a snail, this mod would already be in. The only thing that's stopping me is the 2 hours labor Toyota quotes in their paperwork that I would have to pay my dealer. I have a great tech there that I would no doubt trust with the job but $280 in labor just stings.

Had to sell my 17 Tacoma for a tow rig in order to pull my new home. Still here for a bit to keep in touch.
I got the Pop a Lock brand. Install was easy and spliced to a wire at the kick panel. Works great. A bit loud though. I used some sound deadening stuff on the tail gate and now it sounds a lot more solid.

First two mods on my truck were adding the bed lights and OEM tailgate lock! You will be good to go and the install wasn't too bad. It will go a lot faster if you have access to a lift instead of crawling around underneath.

I have the bed lights and recently installed the power tailgate lock. No conflict between the two. Install was easy and straightforward. The most time consuming part is honestly running the wire and zip tying everything.

I've been kicking around the idea of adding a disconnect switch to the actuator.
I don't lock my truck at home but I like to keep my tailgate locked. Plus I'm a little neurotic about it's wear, having that actuator operate every time I start driving and then every time I get out.

It shouldn’t unlock unless you unlock all of your doors. If it’s just you, you can unlock only the driver’s door with the first click (unless you have it set to unlock all) and that should save you some wear.

Personally, I don’t think it will become a problem in the future. But hey, if you’re going to keep the truck forever, then I guess any bit of preventative maintenance can help!

Yup hardest part of the tailgate lock install was lying on your back and wrestling with those metal ty-wraps on the wire harness near the muffler.
