Anything is better than the OEM crap speakers. I installed Infinity all around. It took a few weeks for them to break in but now they sound great.

Yes. And if you order from Crutchfield, they provide baffles and wiring harnesses for free.

Are you asking about baffles or mounting brackets?

Crutchfield does include mounting brackets with the purchase of speakers, if needed. Baffles are not included.

Do you need to order baffles? No, you don't need to, it's a personal preference, the speakers will work without adding baffles.

My bad... I misread. You're right, Crutchfield does not include baffles. They do include mounting brackets and wiring harnesses.

Thanks. I think I’m going to install them without baffles or foam rings and see how I like the sound. Appreciate it!

I suggest getting some sound deadening material and apply to a least the bottom half of the door especially around the speakers. This will help reduce road noise and improve base response.

    Welcome to TW!

This thread was initially started for those with the Entune Premium Audio (non-JBL) head unit. Given you already have JBL speakers, hopefully your outcome will be good.

I have some closed cell foam insulation board. I thought about gluing a piece on the door behind the speaker. Would that help any?

Yes, insulation behind the speaker as well as around the speaker will improve base response as well as reduce road noise.

Yes, I figured that out too late... so I am going to keep all the JBL (because you have too, it is not just an amp behind the seat) and add two 4 channel amps to boost all 8 channels coming out of the JBL, then feed it back into the factory wiring. At least that is the plan... I have the wiring, but really want to find the 10 and 12 pin plugs male and female so I do not have to cut.

Got it all done on Saturday. Took about 2 hours. Just replaced everything like OP. Didn’t add anything else and the music sounds fantastic! I figured that my old ears couldn’t hear subtle sounds anyway. Thanks to all of the people who posted on the 227 pages of this thread. I enjoyed reading it and am sure my experience went so well because of it. I first ordered some taccotunz tweeters since they were cheaper but then decided to go with the Subaru ones. I tried to cancel the order but those people don’t interact at all. I’ll get around to selling them if anyone is interested. Probably $25. Cost me 40. Man, what a difference the upgrade made! Thanks all, especially OP!

Thanks to everyone for the excellent info. This thread has been a great read and a cool project.

I did the upgrades and they made a significant improvement just as advertised. Before reading this thread I went to a local car stereo place and was quoted $2700+ for speaker upgrades plus amp and sub. I might still do the amp and sub, but it is nice to do this in phases so I can feel good about each component.

I put Noico 80ml sound deadening mat in the doors. Crutchfield forgot to include the adapters for the front 6x9's, so I got everything in but the 6x9s while I waited for the brackets to arrive. The deadening mats made the factory speakers sound much better. For those of you wondering about the door insulation, I am super glad I added them.

I am going to give it a couple months to gauge my feelings about the system and see if the speakers breaking in changes much. The hideaway and key seem like really cool additions though. I am sure I won't stop thinking about them until I have them.

Has anyone seen/heard the Toyota specific door speakers from Memphis audio? From what I can see they are the same as their universa model, but the mounting points are already in the right place for Toyota vehicles with connectors also. Do you like Memphis door speakers?
    Thanks

I have no experience with their speakers but I'm sure someone will have an idea on them. Maybe a separate post in the forum will get more responses if you're looking for Memphis-specific feedback

Installed the tweeters, 6x9 kickers and 6 inch speakers in the back door. The upgrade was pretty easy although I should have ordered through Crutchfield and verified I had everything I needed before I started. For the Kickers I used the pigtails from the original speakers and soldered them to the new speakers. I used the adaptor for the 6x9 but forgot to order them for the 6" speakers in the rear. Comparing the speakers I realized the original speaker could easily be conformed to be the adaptor. It actually worked better than the 6x9 adaptor.

First, I cut out the speaker with a razor knife leaving as much of the connector wire as I could.20210918_143738.jpg

Second I screwed the speaker into my new adaptor. Perfect fit.
    20210918_143749.jpg

Then I soldered the wires to the speaker. This would have been easier with plug n play adaptors but luckily I have a soldering iron.
