Towing an RV... it is possible believe it or not!

Everyone will probably tell you a different story but just know that your new Gulf Stream is going to basically be a big sail behind you. In high wind weather, or when an 18 wheeler or another RV passes you, she's going to want to move. I'm unfamiliar with that brand of WDH but a lot of companies these days sell just WDHs at lower price points but for a little extra $$, offer WDHs with "integrated" Sway Control. Other WDH manufacturers will offer an add-on accessory piece that serves as a sway controller. Either way, for me, the extra money for piece of mind was a no brainer and I would recommend it to anyone else.

Congrats on the nty taco and TT - the wife and I briefly looked at the Vintage line - did you go with the Teal or Red color scheme??

 

Self contained? There's no shitter if that's what you mean. Haha. I have a portapotty, solar shower, and one of those privacy tents, but luckily haven't needed it yet. I do love the trailer though. Previous owner restored it. New electric, and painted everything. I added a small solar charger and a few other tid bits.

I might try the KDMax tune and see if it helps with the towing. On some uphill sections i'm in 3rd gear just trying to maintain 50-55 mph.

 

Love the old school rig! We haven't been into the mountains yet, more like "large hills", but it definitely needs to get into the higher RPM power band to maintain 65. Definitely not flooring it, but I can confirm it takes more for sure...

 

That's part of it. Grey, black and fresh water tanks along with a DC battery system for lights, heat and water.

What Year is this? I have a 67 that I have added grey and black tanks to. It had fresh.

 

It’s a 1963 Jet. I think they were originally made in Utah. Yeah it has a new DC electric system and also hooks up to shore power. I added a solar trickle to keep the battery topped off. It had a gas heater, range, and over. And has a freshwater system (just 2 6 gal Gerry cans under the sink and an electric pump). It’s pretty small, 15” from hitch to tail. I didn’t want to deal with gray or black water and finding pump stations. I figured if we were in a campground there would be toilets, if we are on BLM or in the middle of nowhere the outdoor outhouse will be fine.
I’d love to see your ‘67.

No way your little camper is sharp. I bet it is a great conversation starter in campgrounds. I bet you even get friendly waves on the highway. These old ones are a ton of fun use and add functionality to.

 

I usually drive in the passing lane and do 55mph. Everyone loves it. They’re always honking and waving at me. Sometimes they get really close to my bumper just to see how cool the trailer is. Just joking. That’s my personal pet peeve.

 

So the wife, our dog, and I just got back from a 15 day, 6 state, 2,800 mile road trip and the Tacoma towed like a dream! Even through the Ozarks of Arkansas and Missouri, high winds in Oklahoma & Kansas, and a few spats of bad weather I never felt her struggle or felt unsafe. It’s all about the proper research and setup of your rig and you can definitely go anywhere you want! Also would highly recommend “RV Trip Wizard” - helped me plan our route, gas stops, and works on Apple Car Play.

Rule of thumb for safe trailer tow is to keep it to 60-70% of your tow capacity.

 

Exhibit A everyone - just as I stated in the very first sentence of this thread when I started it 8 months ago... "After months of research and everyone having an opinion on what my truck could or couldn't do," - to each their own...

We're happy with our TT choice and feel safe with our Taco, but for every guy like me, there's one on the other side who will tell you horror stories of how bad a Taco struggles or how they had to sell their trailer immediately. This info was intended to be informative for those who were interested and that was all, everyone has to make their own decision.

 

Did you have to deactivate the integrated trailer sway control (in the Tacoma) when you went with your Blue Ox WDH with built-in sway control?

 

Toyota’s VSC (vehicle stability control) is part of the overall traction control system and trailer sway protection. In my 2018 Tacoma there’s only 1 button that disables one or both based on a push or a hold. That being said, no, I haven’t ever disabled it and never had issue.

 

Awesome, thanks for the feedback. I'm looking at a similarly weighted Apex Nano and will be using your mods as my guide to towing. I really appreciate this thread as there are a lot of strong opinions on towing on TW.
