Can anyone update me on the year that became the turning point between being a pretty fancy car and a blinged out truck?

Personally I think it has to do with the 'soccer dad' mentality. As in I don't want to haul the kids in a 'soccer mom' mini van, even though it's pretty posh, because you know, it doesn't set right with my bun, manscaping and hipster style. A truck would fit my flannel outdoors image, but it needs to be posh too. And have aggressive tires, black wheels, be de-chromed and have a lift.

If Toyota offered a way to add options at the time of purchase, man that would be awesome.

CD Player? Seriously? Let's get some real needed technology into these new fangled machines!!

I wrote a letter to Toyota telling them to get with it and add one of these. They responded with just one sentence.... "The Times They Are A-Changing."

Mods? We don't need no stinking mods.
Exactly. Easy enough to hit the button on the fob or just run your finger over the handle.

I don't want it locking every time I exit the vehicle, though, since I never lock it in my garage. Nor do I want it locked at a camp site or some of the other places I travel.

I wouldn't call this list "whining" in the way someone who bought the totally base, cheapest model SR complaining about not having intermittent wipers is. ;)

I think we could ALL sit down and make a shortlist of small things that we think would be an improvement in our trucks.

I think the only thing that really bugs me is that the LED headlights are an extra-cost add-on for a $40k Tacoma but standard on a $16k Corolla. That's silly.

Having just come from a 2020 Honda Civic, I will say that the BSM (I really like the Toyota way, just the orange signal in my mirrors), keyless entry (the Honda had a long delay when you touched the handle, the Toyota is almost instant), and backup camera (Toyota has way better resolution) are 3 noticeably BETTER things coming from the Honda to the Toyota. I had that walk-away auto-lock in the Civic and turned it off 2 days after I got the car, way annoying, so much beeping all the time, I really don't get the draw of that feature.

I'm with you on the cd player, my old tundra had one we used on 10+ hr. towing trips up north...still got a chit load of cd's. As for a locking gas door...my tundra had that to, but my taco has a locking gas cap which has been fine.

There’s a small pocket and loop at the bottom edge of the seat where the back of the seat meets the ass of the seat. That’s where you put the seat belt buckles to keep them from falling down. Just tuck em in

I'm glad there is no auto-lock when I walk away. It keeps me in the habit of ensuring the truck is locked myself.

As for the BSM, I'm pretty sure mine yells at me if I'm not paying attention, sometimes even when taking a double lane left or right turn and a car is next to me. Not sure why they would discontinue that.

As for the CD player, I was glad mine came with one but I've never used it. I never used the one in my last truck either. These days I can stream it or download it to my phone and play it over the speakers.

Fuel door lock, I can get behind that one. But very few, if any, modern vehicles come with these. Manufacturers tend to resort to siphon resistant measures instead. Although I can't vouch for Toyota specifically.

Leather I could take or leave. It looks nice, but cloth doesn't damage as easily (at least cosmetically).

Disc brakes, I agree with you. Not necessary here but do look nicer.

Yes you do. A push button doesn't mean you wouldn't do that anymore. Most other manuals on the market currently have a push button.

Mine doesn't, and I have the same year truck as yours. I've often wondered why it doesn't give any audible warning if the indicator in the side mirror is flashing when you put on your turn signal. In my Nissan Armada when you put the turn signal on if there's a vehicle alongside you get a quick beep beep beep audible warning. It would seem that some smart guy like @daveeasa could figure out which wire's to tap into and build a simple device to provide this function.
