California to Test for ECU Tunes during Emissions Testing

Just an FYI for anyone running an ECU Tune in California:

I guess the statement from OVTune that their tune is undetectable will be put to the test!

 

The beginning of the RPM act / EPA - CARB ... The EPA and CARB is getting very strict on enforcement of modifying vehicles with Vin #'s

 

This is not terribly surprising though as many (most?) tuners don't do any testing at all with regard to emissions output after the tune. A good tune on a gas powered vehicle should actually reduce emissions since you are using all of the fuel that you're sending to the motor. Are there any CARB approved software flashes out there? I believe that several of the supercharger tunes were CARB approved.

I was on the fence on getting the ov tune after seeing the california tune testing. Might have to pull the trigger...hopefully more member will chime after smogging

 

Just to clarify, the CVC Tune passed smog with flying colors. I can only ASSUME with other tunes, you should be fine. I got to talk to the shop owner and the way the new smog laws test is based on parameters on how the engine runs. If it runs too far out of factory spec, it will get flagged and state ref’d. It’s not just based on whether or not a tune is detected, but it sees how much the performance has been modified, and has only so much room for “wear and tear.” Any other tune is not the same as ours. As far as facts go, I don’t know the results on other tunes, so I can’t speak for them. But we have confirmation that the CVC Tune specifically will pass we’ll be testing this every 6 months as the parameters within the law changes/is updated to ensure CVC is smog compliant! #StayTuned!

I’ve got a 2019 TRD OR with the KDMAX tune and non issues with smog, I just got it done yesterday.

Yes, move back to Cali from VA and needed a smog in order to register in Cali.

 

I've over CA, so much nonsense to deal with when doing anything. The lefties can enjoy trying to charge their EV's now that Oroville isn't generating power and Mead isn't far behind.

Can we assume that the more "common" tunes offered here are undetected/ok?

 

my buddy who owns a smog inspection station said anything that modifies fuel curve or timing will automatically fail smog when hooked up to the obdII port.

 

That's why I have my own tuning hardware.

 

I was just at a star smog station this past Saturday with the OV 87 tune on my truck and it passed no problem.
