    Oil Question.

New V6 Tacoma. Not sure what the OME oil is. If I change oil and filter at 1000 miles should I use synthetic? Or, perhaps better to get some miles on the engine first?

    thanks,

The oil is 0w20. All 0 series oil is synthetic. This topic is subjective but I do not know that I would change it so soon. I did my first change at 5k miles and will do so every 5k. Interval set by Toyota is too long for me to be comfortable with.

cool cool. I was wondering the same thing. when I bought the truck they offered first 5 services for an additional upfront price. I said sure, 1st service was at 8k, I was hoping they would change filter when they do oil, but all they did was top up oils and rotate tires. didn't even bother looking at cabin and air filters I am assuming since nothing in the interior glove looked moved. I really got get more hands on.... The maintenance schedule says change filter at 16k I believe. Seems hella long, but alas i'll be there in a couple of weeks @ 13k now got truck in May. btw your manual tells you what oil to use and is it also not on the lid of the oil spout.

    oh and welcome to TW!

It all depends on how quickly you are putting miles on the truck. If you are putting a 1,000 miles on the truck each month then why not wait a couple of months before the oil change. If it is going to take you a year or more to put a 1,000 miles on the truck then you might want to consider changing the oil more by time and not mileage.

Changing oil, especially synthetic oil, is not because oil wears out but is to remove contaminants suspended in the oil.

I've heard the argument that the original oil is not 0w20, but an oil designed for break in period. Changing too soon is not as beneficial as you think that it is. Not sure if this applies to Toyotas, but it made sense to me. Then again, we all have that co-worker who is a smart gear head that fills us with these beliefs.

There is some amazing info in those little books in the glove box. It's like a little library in there!

You could change it now, but I'd wait til 2k.

I like to run Pennzoil Ultra platinum 0/20 because it's a group 3+, not a group III like most oils. The PUP is nearly as good as a group 4/5, but at 1/2 the cost.

I found a change at 6months/7k miles works for me. Others will tell you 10k is fine. I'd say if you plan on selling the truck within 8 years, none of this really matters.
If your planing on driving til it blows up, then take care of it.

Filter could be OEM Toyota, but I like the aftermarket Synthetic types.

OP. Open your Owner's Manual (OM).

It will have details on when to do the first change and all subsequent change intervals.

The OM is quite handy because it will also specify which oil viscosity to use and what API (American Petroleum Institute) specification the oil needs to meet or exceed.

Dino or Syn doesn't matter as long as it meets the API spec and the viscosity requirements.

There is so much discussion and argument over what oil is the best brand. And then when to change it the first time. Honestly do what you want. There is no harm in doing it sooner but don't wait over what Toyota says in the manual.

I changed mine at around 4,500 miles and sent a sample to Blackstone labs. Was all that needed, no but I wanted to change it and was really curious what they would find in my oil. I have used them yearly on my previous vehicle for over 10 years so I felt it was worth it for knowing how much your engine is wearing.
They found high metals in the first oil sample From my truck but nothing that was out of line for a new engine. I'm glad I changed it.

The oil I used was Shell Rotela gas truck 0w20. I got it on clearance in quarts for $2.50 because advance auto was only planning to carry the 5qt. It was a good oil at a great price, why not. I might switch to Castoil Magnatech when it's used up or maybe SuperTech. Both I can pick up at Walmart.

Really any full synthetic oil 0w20 that meets the spec in the owners manual is fine. Pick one brand you like and can easily get in your area. Change it regularly and be happy.
