I’m currently looking at an SR5 and an off road, similarly equipped. Is the off road worth the extra money?

    Do you go off-road?
Do you need a rear locker?
Are you interested in Crawl Control, MTS, etc?
Is there value to you in any of the other features of the OR?

Everyone here will tell you, you absolutely need the OR. IMO only you know how you will use your truck and the value of the features on each different trim to you. :notsure:

It was for me. It's all comes down to will you use the added features.

There are feature differences only you can decide if they are worth it to you. They ain't cheap.
More importantly, the OR package (since 2016) has the heftier leaf springs which is the fix for the driveshaft deceleration vibration on the SR5.
See page 2 of T-SB-0124-20. I had it done. Ask yourself if you want to go thru that (Dealership balks but you can escalate until they listen.)

I don't regret it. The locker has come in handy a few times, but probably could've managed. I went with the manual, so no crawl control. I knew I want the ORD from the start, didn't even look at SR5s so not sure what the price difference is. No doubt the SR% is still a very capable truck. Each their own. Good luck.

Whatever you buy you'll get back when you sell it. Like always, better to have and not need than to need and not have.

Depends on how you're going to use it.
I bought the OR for the locking diff but swapped out all the suspension components for about $3,800.
Upgraded the stereo and added Clazzio seat covers for probably $900 combined.
I install everything myself so I don't have to waste money on shops doing it.
You could get a rear locker for like $1,200 all in for parts I believe.
So now that I've thought about it the SR5 is about $6k less in MSRP than the OR.
For that difference you can build an SR5 that would totally out perform a stock OR.

    Now the pro.... Absolutely not.
Unless you want the status symbol you can build an SR5 to be way more capable than the pro for less money.
The SR5's MSRP is $16k less than the Pro you could make an absolute trail slayer out of an SR5 with $16k. You could put a badass suspension the supercharger and the scooped hood.

OP, it depends on whether the additional features on the OR are of any value to you. The OR has the rear locker, crawl control, etc., but you also get the smart key system, LED daytime running lights, and the ability to add options not available on the SR5. If that stuff doesn’t appeal to you, then the SR5 is a great truck and you can build it the way you want. Like others have said, TW will 100% say the OR is the only option, but the SR5 is plenty capable for 99% of people. Just depends on what you want and need from the truck.

    1) Do you want a manual transmission?
    2) Do you want all-terrain tires?
    3) Do you want a rear e-locker?
    4) Do you want off-road traction control?
    5) Do you want a clinometer?

EDIT: do you want off-road tuned shocks?

In my 20/20 hindsight, I’d say it would depend on what you’re going to do with your truck. I told my 2018 sales guy I wanted a 4wd Tacoma that could tow up to 4000# and would fit into my apt parking garage space. Sales guy showed me a SB OR. I liked how it looked so I bought it. If he would have showed me a SR5, likely same story. I got up-sold but it turns out that the OR suspension works well here in the pothole capital of North America. Used crawl control once in three years just to see how it worked.

The OR has features that you probably won’t need either, so, if you want to save a little dough, get the SR5. If you want to be happy get what you want. :)

I'm totally happy with my SR5.
While some of the features of the O.R. would be great for those who really play off-road I
won't be doing that level of O.R. stuff. The SR5 will do just fine on forest-service-roads taking
me to a fishing spot, or to dark-sky-territory so I can do astro-photography, camp, etc.

The biggest upgrade I'll do ( besides BakFlip MX4, bed lights, bed step ) will be some decent
off-road tires. 90% of my travels is on the road, so anything that can handle any type of off-road
event no matter how easy will have to behave on the street nicely.

This will be a year or 2 or 3 down the road anyway.

#1 was the only reason I got a TRD trim lol. I mean, I like having the locker and clinometer is neat.

That being said, if the SR5 came in a manual I would bought that for sure and a few thousand.

Nope. I’d place a lot of money on 80% of people that buy OR never encounter a real situation where they would need a locker. If you’re really going offroad, like real offroad, sure buy it. If not, save the money, or buy soemthing cool with it.

The manual was my top reason, but I did want the locker and ATRAC as well. I included the clinometer for humor; albeit I do nerd out on it once in a while. :)

The stock OR tires are also noticeably better in snow than the all-season tires that came on my 2016 SR5, so much so that I stopped carrying weight in the bed during winter.

I’m a coward but if my SR5 in 4WD low
Won’t go up a trail I want nothing to do with that trail.

Simply slap on some A/T or M/T tires to your SR5 and you'll be doing trails you only dreamed of before. :)

When I got my OR last November, I was looking for an SR5 because all I really need is basic 4x4. But when I got to the dealership, the 3 SR5s they had were all loaded down with $4-5K worth of stupid dealer add-os and were all within a grand or so of the price of the 1 OR they had on the lot. So I got the OR (and it happened to be in the color I wanted too). But if the SR5s were several thousand less like they should have been, I would’ve happily got an SR5 and never looked back. All that said, I have no regrets and love my OR. I also like the look of the OR better.

Depends on how much extra? So how much we talking here?

I like my OR and got a pretty good deal on it, and when I bought, the SR5 was missing a key feature I liked that has since been added, but if I had an SR5 I'm positive I would like it too.
