I wouldn't be worried about a single tank of it, but if he's already burned through a half tank and cut it with high-test, it should be clearing up by now if E85 were the issue; plain shitty gas on the other hand, especially if it's got water... that will make the car throw fits too!

If the check engine light is flashing it should not be driven at all! It will destroy your cat(s) and be an even more costly repair. Those engines tend to use oil as they age anyways which does no good to the cat in itself, throw some extra un-burnt fuel in there and it's a recipe for disaster. You need to get one of those Bluetooth OBD scanners so you can see misfire data as it happens, to pinpoint it down. Just bought one myself, was $30 off Amazon.

Also depending on the last timing belt change, it could have jumped enough to throw off timing, but not put the valves through the pistons. Kind of a rare occurrence, but does happen.

At least 2 of the ignition coils have gas on them so they're getting replaced. One spark plug was barely finger tight. Not sure how that happened.

Parts store had either 1 or a 4 pack of coils. Four it is since I haven't had eyes on the last 2 yet.

Other hurdle - the boot is stuck to one of the plugs down in the hole. Naturally it's in the back against the firewall so that'll be fun.
