    Hello

I have a 2021 stock Toyota Tacoma off road 4x4 4 door long bed. 1800 miles 8 weeks from dealership.

Side curtain airbags spontaneously deployed at 5 mph opon crest of hill. No impact or potential roll over. Knocked me out and tore up my face and interior of 2021 Toyota Tacoma Off Road.

Been in that same spot with my 2wd 08 Tacoma an other vehicles. Tourists in rental cars and trucks with boat trailers in same spot.

    Anyone else have issues?

If you have this Tacoma beware. Could kill a child, fragile person or elderly...

They will review the incident, you were likely offroading and the vehicle changed direction too rapidly and the truck predicted roll over.

You're hooped if you lie to them. The brain box stores all the data from when it happened.

Yeah. The Toyota system deployed ems and police when airbags deployed, so with insurance company and police inspection of vehicle and the onboard computer hopefull to sort it out.

Not sure why airbags would deploy at 5 mph with no impact or potential roll over risk...

Just giving Toyota owners heads up it happened.

I worked EMS for over 20 years, all of it in the NYC metro area. Never once was I on a job with injuries from an airbag deployment for no apparent reason. Anything is possible but I've never seen it, and I've seen a lot of weird shit.

Ems was contacted and deployed through the Toyota on-board system because the side curtain airbags deployed. They don't know the reason for airbags deployment yet. That's the intent for this post.

Possible malfunctions. Potential for consumers injury.

I was inevolved in search and rescue, Ems, logging, mining, ranching in the mountains of rural Oregon, Alaska, Hawaii and other countries. Driven a lot of miles over 30 + years in rough terrain with no issues. I've owned an driven a 94 hilux, 98 4 runner, 08 2wd Tacoma and 2016 trd off road. As well as DODGE, ford, International, Subaru and Chevy. Never had an airbag deploy. Ever.

Just want to make sure no one gets hurt due to a Tacoma defect.

That's really unfortunate. Terrible luck if what you say is true.

I've never heard of this happening to a Tacoma or any vehicle for that matter.

But come on with the warning, what do you expect anyone to do with this information? I could factor in your one in a million incident and sell the truck, maybe deactivate the curtain bags? Or I could go on living my life not worrying about a low probability with moderate injury risk event, that I can't do anything about anyways.

Now you got me a bit worried that this does not happen to me could I would have a heart attack. The noise of the deploy must of been loud and the feeling of someone slapping up side the head.Sure it scared the hell of out of you. Thanks for posting.

It reminds me of the movie The Right Stuff where the german is talking about how the hatch has been rung inside out and they just don't blow.

Be sure to report it to NHSTA. Please don't assume someone else will do it for you.
    Glad your injuries weren't worse.

Not for nothin' but what are we supposed to do with this warning? Wear a football helmet to drive? Bring out trucks to the dealer and say "could you please check the side curtain air bags to make sure they won't deploy for no reason?". Your contacts should be with the dealership, Toyota customer care, NHSTA, and then Dewey, Cheetum, & Howe.

Again, I suppose it's possible to have an air bag sensor malfunction which would cause an unintended deployment, and I suppose it's theoretically possible to be knocked unconscious by one. Just like it's possible to have a catastrophic failure of a part on a commercial aircraft that causes an accident. Both probably have a similar level of probability.

And now we are aware of a potential problem. If I hear of another then I can say "hey, I heard about this before".
Remember, all those Billions of dollars spent on Air Bag recalls had to start somewhere.
I hope this isn't one for us..
