I believe there's extra hardware on the brake system on front tires limiting the size of calipers you can use. I don't remember what thread it's on but it's documented in a couple places. Or maybe I'm thinking of the Tundra brake upgrade that's on the site....fuck now I can't remember.

For those with a vacuum assist brake booster, your pedal will engage the brakes a little closer to the floor, but not a terribly concerning amount. Don't know what master cylinder would fix that.
If you swap the master cylinder, or are having related issues, I understand you'll need Toyota or someone with the appropriate computer to switch the anti-lock to get a proper bleed. Just learning about this in search of why my brakes suck so bad, hope to get a proper bleed soon.

Thanks for that. Gonna do this next time I do my brakes. Sucks I just got a stoptech kit like 6 months ago haha

Its my understanding that the bigger calipers need more fluid and that why you upgrade master cyclinders also. Can’t do that with an off road. Just wondering if anyone has tried.

I have it done on my 06 TRD off road. I do have 17" wheels. The brake pedal did not feel any different to me. I have the vacuum booster on my truck. The master upgrade is mostly for doing the rear disk conversion. As it will need more fluid than the cylinders for the shoes. Also my understanding was the GX470/4-runner calipers have the same diameter pistons, they mount farter out to use the 13.3" rotors.

I did this on my '15 OR with 17" wheels, and have been running it for 3+ years. I didn't need to upgrade anything other than the parts listed (rotors, calipers, pads, dust shields). It completely fixed the weak braking issues I had.

Awesome! Definitely doing this then. I have a '15 OR with 4Runner 17" Sema wheels. With all the weight I have bolted onto the truck (full armor, roof rack, bed rack and RTT) it could use some extra stopping power. Thanks for the input!

Ok read this entire thread, and I am definitely in need of increased braking performance as my truck is fully armored and on 34s so this mod makes sense. But I have one question for you all? Are these the same piston bore as stock Tacoma brakes? I am literally on my 3rd frozen calipers from mud and water crossings I think. This is the real reason I want to do this upgrade. Will I see less frozen calipers because of the thicker rotors and larger calipers ?

I can’t recall the specifics but iirc the 4Runner calipers have pistons that are a few mm larger than the stock ones. As for the freezing etc. I have no clue

Very simple and straightforward brake upgrade.
I am running American Racing 17" rims with no clearance issues.20210904_123430.jpg
Previously I was running the EBC rotors with Green Stuff pads. I was happy with performance, but they were worn. I had gone through 1.5 sets of pads and the rotors had worn to the bottom of the drilled holes and slots. Saw this mod and decided to go for it.
20210904_085019.jpg Did the driver's side 1st and checked for wheel fitnent. All was good so I continued. Altogether it took 5 hours working at a relaxed pace.
    20210904_122045.jpg
Took a brief test ride and the brakes feel like an improvement, looking forward to more windshield time.

As some have said the rotor size doesn’t seem to be much bigger but it is such a huge difference in stopping! Since the diameter is bigger it pushes the calipers out further which also increases your stopping force to go along with the bigger piston size. So happy with this upgrade! Thanks to @1E7DCSB for your part list. Made shopping a breeze

I did this upgrade, no need for master swap imo, brake work great. I used 4runner calipers, StopTech Cryo slotted rotors and hawk pads. I also had calipers powder coated to match the truck. Great easy mod

Might be a dumb question but has anyone who bought new (reman) calipers from the local box stores like Autozone/Napa/Advance/Oreilly found a good way fulfill the core deposit? From what I can tell they won't take the Tacoma calipers in exchange. Just trying to see how I can get my $90 back. Can't find any junk ones from eBay or local junkyards so I'm pretty sure I'll have to eat that cost. Also they appear to be more expensive now but Napa has discount codes for online that takes off a bit but not much.

During my search I also found that Napa and O'Reillys are the only ones selling pre-powdercoated reman calipers. Napa is "Total Eclipse" which I believe are done by Cardone. O'Reillys is BrakeBest brand but have no idea who does those. Possibly the same exact company. Anyone have inside info?

It's been a while since I've done this job but I'm almost positive I took my OEM calipers back to NAPA and they didn't say a thing.

Good to know, thanks! Don't recall where I read it from this thread or another big brake thread but that was a report from other people. I'll give it a shot! Will definitely make it easier to swallow the costs on this project.

With all these incorrect cores getting returned it's only a matter of time before people start posting in this thread "I ordered the big calipers from NAPA and when I opened the box it was regular Tacoma calipers, even though the box says it's the right part!" LOL

I boxed up my OE calipers and took them back to a NAPA store in the eclipse box. I had all my parts shipped from Toyota dlr and NAPA direct, they still took them back when I showed the clerk the reciept. You shouldnt have a problem.
