So when I worked for Chevy we had a mother come in screaming mad and her daughter was behind her crying. The mother was saying her daughter was driving her new Chevy equinox when the side airbags "randomly deployed" and it could have killed her. The mom was planning on suing Chevy and blah, blah, blah you get the point. We pulled the vehicle and read the diagnostics, cars store information on a EDR (event data recording), and found some interesting events. The events that led to the airbags being set off was the car traveling at speeds of 50 mph when it detected the front right and rear right wheel traveling at different speeds and a roll of the vehicle greater than 45 degrees. When we reported this to the mother she turned and asked her daughter what really happened. The daughter admitted that she was texting and driving hit a curb at said stated speed and the vehicle was launched up on two wheels. The equinox did its job and detected what it was programmed to do in the event of a rollover. The vehicle never actually rolled over, but what I'm saying is everything is stored on a "computer" of some sort. Since the daughter admitted fault right there the total for new side airbags, wiring harness which is standard for new airbags, airbag module, miscellaneous parts, plus labor was roughly around $29,000 since we have to take all the interior out to run the new wiring harness. The truth is in the pudding or in this case EDR, hopefully you are telling the truth OP.

Out of curiosity - do the 3rd Gen Tacos not have an "RSCA Off" button? Or does the system turn off when 4Lo is engaged?

First, I really hope this isn't true and you are seriously okay.

Secondly, being in fire / EMS for a few years, I have never personally seen or heard of random airbag activation. However, I have seen it save many lives r from further injury.

    Proof please

minor, TRD skid plate, front recovery points, Regken mud flaps, rear diff breather, AC drain pipe extended. Upgraded sound with active sub woofer, tonneau cover, CB radio.
Side air bags spontaneous inflation in theory possible with any car/truck, depends of sensors calibration.
My experience with described situation - with Nissan X terra. Multiple cases of curtain air bags inflating (2013-2015) - depends of the angle
of body (off and on road) and vibrations. Result - TSB was issued and sensors were re-calibrated to fix the issue.
But until now never heard anything like that about Tacomas.

OP is full of it. This is why.. no one goes 5 mph on road unless you are in a parking lol. The fact that he claims he was cresting a hill at 5mph leads to logical conclusion he was offroading mot on road. Also, he attempts to justify it as random because he has been at that spot before in his other truck without a problem. Seems weird to say that if this happened on road. No.. what the OP said in his post is telling.. he was cresting a hill offroad and screwed up.. and pow air bag blows

For what it’s worth, 2nd Gen Tacoma’s literally have a button for turning off the RSCA system (roll sensing curtain airbags) when offroading.

Apparently Toyota thought there was enough of a risk to provide a separate button to allow the driver to bypass the system. I’m assuming the 3G Tacoma’s have something similar. Maybe OP tripped the system somehow.
