I do too. A junkyard motor is going to cost tho. He can get more than 10K with no motor right now.

You've probably got some equity in it above what the motor replacement would cost that could go towards a trade.

Maybe get lucky and find a low mileage total lose Tacoma and get the motor at a good price . Nice looking truck , what a mess .

Bought new 5-1/2 years ago and still owe $10K? What was the term of your loan?
Guess the "I want" got in the way of "I can afford."
You can do a couple of things:
    1. Find the money to cover a new engine (or short block) and its install, then work on getting it totally paid off.
    2. As someone else said, put it on CL and hope that you'll get enough as-is to pay off the loan.
    -
Then reconsider your approach to vehicle ownership.
Never, ever drive off the dealer's lot upside-down on the financing.
Always do a loan duration for the shortest amount of time so if sh!t happens, it's still new enough to get sold for more than the loan balance.
    -
My '89 Toyota pickup had a valve spring break. Retaining clips came off, valve dropped into the cylinder and rode up & down on the piston. Scored the cylinder wall really bad. It was just beyond warranty, Toyota was no help, and it was too young for rebuilt (or used) engines to be found. Had to pay for a new short block and the labor to swap parts and reinstall. That hurt big time.
BUT - it was paid off at the time, so I only had to find the funds to cover the repair, which was my only sensible option.

I bought the Tacoma out of necessity. I had $5k to put down but took the financing I could get, cause I still had a bankruptcy on my credit from a bad divorce. Sold my 2006 Matrix when I moved to the mountains cause I got in a wreck on Battle Mountain and needed a 4WD. Went the max 84 months so I could afford the payment. Wish I was in a better financial place, but also never expected to have this truck blow up.

    What is CL?

If it was a frat bro named Trevor or Zach i'd be ripping into them like a bag of Doritos. These are the same people that likely have an Instaham dedicated to how they don't let the dealer touch their truck because they know better, but some how on the weekends try and ford the river like Old Oregon Trail and wonder why their cold water intake sucked up six gallons of river water like a frat boy drinks Natty.

Why did they ford the river? To hike, bike, rock climb, camp, get baked, hunt? Nope to get the perfect instaham shot.

It's understandable, we're not all made of money and sometimes life just shits on you and you have to make the best of what you can. Buying a Tacoma seems like safe bet based on their record of reliability and resale value. Nobody expects to blow an engine at 145K.

    CL = CraigsList.
You might also see if you can put it up for auction on eBay.
I'd find out exactly what's wrong and get an estimate on cost to fix before you do anything you might regret later.

First of all, welcome to TW. It sucks that something like this happened, and these things always seem to happen at the worst possible time for you to have to deal with them. Please don't feel, however, that you need to justify your financial decisions to any of us. Only you know your circumstances. Others certainly don't, nor is it our business. Kind of sucks that you came here to see if the engine failure has happened to others and get some advice on how best to proceed to fix the problem, and end up getting a lecture about how you shouldn't have bought this much truck and general fiscal responsibility. People forget that all our circumstances are different and we all have good and bad times. This is a great group of fellow Tacoma owners and a great place to learn. Hope you stick around and keep us posted on how you're doing!

I got the Platinum extended warranty when I bought it. That ended at 100k miles.

I think I will fix it and sell it/trade it in asap, if they can get me financed for something new. I don't think I could trust it if I kept it.

Just so disappointed right now. It is the 4th Toyota I've owned and never had any issues with them. I put all the nice accessories into her and now they won't amount to anything.

I would still find out what happened as the dealer might be responsible.

100% That second opinion from a legitimate independent would be well worth it. I've owned lots of cars and found dealers doing some surprisingly shady things so my faith in them is quite low.

Don't let it sour you on your truck.
If everything else is good and without problems, fix the damn engine and it'll be almost as good as new. I put 5-6 more years on my '89 after replacing most of the engine. Never once felt like I couldn't trust it. Then went and bought 3 more Toyotas after that one. Things fail/break - it's just the way life can be.

If it was me I would get another engine or have your engine fixed. Any new car will cost several thousand extra due to the computer chip shortage. It will cost a fortune but you are in a bad situation and I feel for you.

Really strange. If it really was rod knock you heard, that is almost always caused by a lack of or improper/ contaminated oil. Manufacturing defects are basically ruled out at 145k.
