We generally know the direction of the winds aloft...although they frequently change during flight. Before launching, we send up small test balloons - pie balls - to gauge the speed and direction. That gives us an idea of where we are headed. But, you never really know until you're up in the air and flying. We guarantee our passengers at least 30 minutes of flying and typically go 45 mins to and hour based on speed and direction since we also need safe landing spots. There are a lot of factors that impact flight time - heat, weight, winds, size of the balloon, etc - as propane is consumed. The pilots begin to look for safe landing areas as they approach the minimum flight time and then decide how much longer they can fly and where they plan on landing. The actual decision where to land can be changed at the last minute by the winds since they are often coming from different directions at different heights so as the pilot descends, he might hit a wind that pushes him away from the planned landing site - you don't have much steering capability. The chase crew follows on the ground - or jumps ahead as we can - to await the balloon but generally always try to keep it in sight (we also have radios).

Over time, when you fly out of the same launch points (we typically use one of 3 depending on wind direction) so you learn the landing spots. It's a bit more challenging when we travel and fly out of places that are new or where we fly less frequently. Then it is pilot skill and experience that decided where to land.

No, the house we just bought has a heated floor in the master bath, but we can't get the controls to work, set the time, set the schedule or anything.
There's a home improvement thread? And would OZ know about US products?
