I recently installed a light bar and ran the wiring for the switch into the cab and into one of the spare switch blanks on the panel to the lower left of the steering wheel near my left knee. When I had the panel off I noticed that there was a plug that wasn’t hooked up to any switch but was docked in an empty holder, so it is unused. Was wondering if any of you have found something similar in your Tacoma. Would like to know what it’s for and if I can enable whatever it’s wired to by simply installing the correct switch for it.

Without a picture, it could be the towing brake controller connector.

Towing brake controller, that’s a good guess.

I could take a pic but I’m not sure what the pic would show? The connector wire behind the panel is not labeled but it runs down to the switch panel with all the others. The other connectors plug into the back of their respective switches while the unused one is simply “docked” in a holder with no switch to connect to.
Trailer brake controller is a good idea though.

If it's docked, then it could be the Cargo Bed Lamp switch connector. Do you have an access cab?

I do have access cab, but that light is only a brake light. Doesn’t seem to be set up with the cargo light. Maybe that’s why it’s not hooked up behind the panel.

The Access Cabs don't have the cargo lights in the third brake light housing, and they don't come standard with the switch. But they are wired for the accessory bed lights. The connector that is neatly pocketed behind the panel is for the switch. Adding the bed lights is an easy plug-and-play installation. You will need the bed light kit plus the switch (the switch costs as much as the lights themselves).

No need for the OEM switch if you get a jumper wire and connector.

They would be ON with unlock/lock like the cab illumination.

Or add a small dpdt switch wired same as OEM switch. There are options.
