Speaking of, just ordered 2 Taliban Telecom UV-5Rs for ATR (and other wheeling adventures), over

 

Should have sprung for the

$63 BF-F8HP (UV-5R 3rd Gen) 8-Watt Dual Band Two-Way Radio (136-174MHz VHF & 400-520MHz UHF) Includes Full Kit with Large Battery

BF-F8HP. 8 watts is mo beeter than 5. Get that GMRS license and you can rock a 50 watt vehicle mounted unit. If you need help programming your radio, I've been down that rabbit hole and can just give you my settings and channel presets. Programming it right will make it feel like a $200 radio until it just stops working for no reason, OVER

 

The clowns that run ATR all claim that 5 watts is more power than we'll ever need on those mountains. Mostly because our groups are kept pretty tight. If I was out west or out in the field somewhere I definitely would want a vehicle amount of unit with some real power but until then, 26 bucks will save my bacon. Over

 

Indeed, just make sure the mountains don't have any corners or hills to block your Fischer Price walkie-talkie. I went 8w for all my handhelds after a few incidents where 5 was just not enough. Again, I'm not sure if you have looked up how to program the radio, but it's not intuitive and there aren't many plug and play files. Plus, the stock squelch and tuning settings are essentially unusable. I'll dig mine up when I get home and I'll PM them to you.
