Front Rear Diff/Transfer Case and Manual Trans Gear oil Change

Time for front and rear differential, transfer case and manual transmission gear oil change on my 00 Tacoma. Looking in my owners manual I see

$30 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75W-90 GL4 or GL5 recommended. Rear diff says 90 weight above zero or 80w or 80w-90 below zero. Anyone use 75w-90 in everything. Any particular brand? Synthetic or dino oil?

75w-90 in both diffs and the transfer case, works great. Can’t speak to the manual transmission from personal experience, but most people recommend Redline MT-90.

Always remove fill plugs before drain plugs and clean the HEX plug before inserting wrench.
REPLACE crush washers with new

I did MT90 in my MT a few weeks ago and I think it definitely shifts better, getting into first was a rough spot and its easy now.


If you're doing both tcase and transmission, consider removing the shifters and filling them from the top, and maybe do the shifter bushing on the MT while you're in there. Just be prepared to re-seal when you're done, I tried reusing the gasket and that went poorly.

75W-90 has been my go-to staple gear oil in the '97 Taco front diff/locker rear diff/transmission/xfer case since I bought it in the '90s. If I did change oil brand, it would be Redline 90W just to give it its turn at bat. .02

Amsoil for diffs

 

Undo fill plugs first, then undo drain.

This is in case you fuck up the fill plug yet already removed the drain plug.

 

I need to mine soon. How much fluid to I need for each?

Also, if you want to do away with the hex plugs on your front diff altogether;

Front diff fill plug replacement 90341-18060
Front diff drain plug replacement 90341-24016

This will give you a metric bolt head.

$30 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75W-90 GL-5 to Redline MT-90 GL-4 in the R150F 5 speed manual transmission. The Redline MT-90 made a very noticeable positive difference in the function of the synchro rings in the gear box and lowered the noise level of the bearings which appear to be (sound) worn. Will continue to use Amsoil 75W-90 GL-5 in the front and rear diffs but am sold on MT-90 GL-4 use in the gear box. .02

 

I really liked the Valvoline in a bag. The bag is flexible so you don’t need a pump, and they are cheap and available at Walmart.

 

I did 80W90 in the rear diff and 75W90 in the T-case and front diff. This is what the manual specifies so I just followed up.

 

Hey this is an awesome looking service kit. Do you know why they offer 2 front diff drain and 2 front diff fill etc? Is it just so you have extras?
