I work doing Disability transport, so I'm driving 8 hours a day during the week. I happened to notice, while waiting at a turn signal, that the oncoming vehicle had a LED fog light light bar on the front bumper that was flashing... 3 quick flashes then a brief pause. He had just barely missed the light... And then it really quickly turned green again. o_O It took me a second to realize, but he had built a module to trigger the EMS override for the turn signals.

I managed to write his plates and vehicle description down, so, I called the non-emergency number for the police and reported him.

It was a standard, off the shelf LED fog light that had been modified, and was flashing into oncoming driver's faces (mine included), so I sincerely doubt this was a legit use of this. I hope they nail him for this, so disrespectful. >_>

Is that how lights are triggered?

last I heard they used IR strobes. I guess you can make em with a remote controller or something. Too complex for me to understand. I usually just run red lights if there’s no traffic around. They’ve recently changed the light pattern here to “slow down traffic”. Every light is about 1/8 mile apart so it’s constantly stop and go...even if it’s 3am and there’s nobody else on the road. If it detects your vehicle coming at above 45mph(speed limit 40) it turns red. Stupidest shit I’ve ever seen.

It’s basically a remote that EMT and fire have. Not the lights themselves. Police cruisers won’t get green lights with their lights on, which is why they always slow down (or are supposed to) at intersections and clear it before going through.

It varies State to State, but also East to West. Oregon, Washington, and California tend to use an older general strobe override, whereas in Wyoming, they... Don't have any kind of control beyond a timer. o.x

Nah, I was just thinking about how nice the winter was in Wyoming, since I'm literally watching the state burn down around me (again).

That, and it was nice to be able to drive for 5 minutes in any direction, and get out of town, and away from literally everyone ever.

I actually need to go down to the PD to ask about something unrelated, I might inquire to see what came of my report. :D

I remember trying to trick the lights by flashing the high beams when I was younger and dumber. I'm curious what the penalty would have been had I gotten caught.

Also, I don't recall if it ever actually worked.

I've actually tried goggling this, but... I don't know the technical term for the override system, so I can't find anything relevant.

Penalty can't be any worse than someone stealing cats or homeless people taking up space on the streets.

So, I did find an article from Colorado, where someone got a $50 fine. Something tells me, that with Oregon literally on fire all over the place, they might issue a more painful fine than $50.

I think they have remotes here in Colorado. They use them in Denver quite a bit

Yeah, I think Midwest/Mountain tends to use RF or similar remotes. West Coast uses Optical. Not sure about the East Coast, I haven't really driven out there much.
