Is there a specific brand of oil to avoid? I'm planning on getting some Royal Purple and a Wix filter for my first (for me) oil change in the Taco, but I just wanted to make sure Royal Purple isn't going to cause issues (Subaru owners tend to avoid Mobile 1 because it likes to leak like crazy).

All oils sold in the US have to meet the 2011 GF5 rating. I doubt you could find a name brand oil that would be bad for your Tacoma. Like TnShooter said, the Royal Purple will be fine.

Yeah, I was prepared to be horribly shocked if it wasn't. But, you never know.

Ironically, I can find Royal Purple more reliably here than anything else. o_O The local parts places always sell out of random oils, but never Royal Purple. I don't mind paying the premium for it, so I'll go for it.

I think the wix filter is good, as long as it isn’t a stubby. Many use the Toyota oem. Think 2 or 3 tuna cans for a stubby, 4 or 5 for a regular tall oem filter.

Stick an empty bottle under the oil filter drain, makes it a little easier to not make a mess.

Somewhere in here, you’ll find someone who took the time to look at most popular filters outside and inside, really detailed, really interesting.

It’s difficult to f up an oil change. Unless you cross thread the drain plug, or leave it loose, or leave the oil filter loose, or forget to put oil in, or drain the transmission and double fill the motor oil.

I've always used WIX filters. Everything I've ever seen about them is good, I'm sure there's been defective ones, but their overall design and quality... Yeah. The dealer I purchased from put a tall filter on, and it has reference part numbers for other common filter brands, including the WIX, which should make it really easy to find a few replacement filters.

I saw the empty bottle trick, I'll certainly give that a shot.

I'm not putting the stock plug back in. Going to be swapping it out for a Fumoto drain valve, getting two actually, one for the Taco and one for the T100.

So, first off, it's a Subaru thing. Second, it doesn't actually 'leak', but for some reason, Mobile 1 will get past the oil seals on the flat 4's.

There's so many threads on the Subaru forums on this, isn't not even funny. Even reports of people going in for new cam/crank/inspection plate gasket replacement, and the tech told them to change oil, and the loss of oil stopped. Also, the WRX/STI/Baja Turbo/Forester Turbo/Legacy Turbo tend to like to force Mobile 1 past the oil seal in the turbo, but Royal Purple, Shell Rotella T, or whatever other oil brands don't do that. Hence my question in this thread (I actually searched, first, including on goggle), but I just wanted to be sure.

In my humble opinion, every oil for sale has to go thru some test and regulations. I doubt there is a bad oil for sale currently. Just buy the correct weight for your car and you should be golden.

transmission might be a different story because those fluids have different additives that might work for a Ford but not Toyota. But engine oil is engine oil.

I have a manual transmission, so I'm pretty sure it's not going to make that big of a difference what oil I use in that...

These trucks run so reliably, I'm convinced you could use cooking oil at this point.

I've been using Toyota (factory) filters and Mobil 1 oil in my cars as far back as I can remember.

It's a Subaru and it is just sharing the love. The love to leak oil I guess. :rain:

Oil does not make engines leak oil.
Piss poor design, gasket material choice, gasket failure, poorly machined mating surfaces, and haphazard assembly cause oil to leak.

I had a 2003 Corolla that was my commuter car for years. I drove 57 miles each way so the feedback loop of learning with oil changes on that car was pretty quick. I sold it last year with a little over 300,000 miles on it and it still ran pretty well.
If I used Mobil 1, I was adding 1/2 quart almost monthly. When I would switch back to conventional, it would be back to no oil added between changes. It was noticeable. It usually took a couple of changes back to conventional to settle back down but that car did not hold synthetic oil well. I never saw a spot on the driveway, it didn't smoke. I'm not sure where it was going, but it lose synthetic remarkably faster than conventional oil.
