I bought a 2007 TRD Sport 2wd tacoma about a year ago. It has been fantastic. However, it is about time for some new tires. When I bought it, to my surprise, it had 285/70/r17 MasterCraft axt's on it! I looked underneath and I do not see any signs (to my knowledge) of a chop, trimming, etc. I don't even think there is a lift!

I do rub when I am at full lock but I can't tell if its the UCA rubbing or the fender. How can I figure this out? As it sits, I barely have any room between the UCA and the tire.

TLDR: I want some new tires but I am so puzzled at how these 285s fit with no mods seemingly done.... and only minimal rub at full lock. Am I missing something?

What’s the offset of your rims & got a picture of them?

Post some pics. No way that tire is fitting on a bone stock truck.

I will take pictures tomorrow and post them. I did double check and I can see that it is indeed the UCA rubbing at full lock (shiny spot on uca). I did look at the fender/mud flaps inside and it might look like the previous own pushed them in and made room but I don't know what the stock fenders looked like on the inside to be able to confirm. As far as offset/type of rim: they are the silver toyota 17 inch rims. potentially stock trd sport rim?

Your probably on stock rims. I’m sure he did something. Check your tires & see if you can see any rub evidence on them. Also a cmc sometimes can be done & it’s painted over with black paint. I’m sure lots of ppl want to see your 33s on your truck! Sounds bad ass

Truck happens to work, and in the driving you do, life is good.

I am guessing you are not driving it in places that would drive your front wheels to their upper travel limits. So, in just normal driving it’s working out fine. And, it’s not a problem.

see the attached pics. See if yall can see evidence of the trimming (I think upon further looking at it as a newbie I can see that the front mud flaps/fender was pushed in maybe)? My pictures don't show it, But I saw that the UCA had a shiny spot on it where the tires rub at full lock (but not in normal conditions as I don't offroad). Only time I go offroad is to do minimal hunting. IMG_8670.jpg IMG_8674.jpg IMG_8673.jpg

@gotoman1969 did you see the pics? You got an idea how the previous owner made this work without a chop? Based off of the pics, can you tell if there was any trimming done?

The wheel offset is what helped. But if you really cycle the suspension and your turning things are gonna rub. And I’ve seen tires of the exact same size vary by as much as a 1/2” .

    +1.

I don’t see obvious modifications to the truck. Chalk it up to good fortune and buy a lottery ticket. :)

Do check the specifications on the tires you are buying to replace these. In particular watch the width as you are having minor contact with UCA at times. Here is what Tire size.com says for dimensions.

@gotoman1969 thanks. How can you tell the offset from these pictures? Are these not stock rims? Also, based on the pics, did he do any trimming to mud
    Flaps?

You current tires are only marginally larger in diameter than a 265/70-17 but they are a good 1 inch wider. I can believe they they fit but if you take off a wheel there MUST be a spacer at least .5" wide. The reason I say you must have a spacer behind the wheel is your spacing between the inner sidewall and the UCA looks to be the same as a 265/70-17.

I guess there could also be a rediculous amount of positive camber but I'm betting on a spacer

you don’t have any mud flaps. They’ve been removed.

They are OEM Toyota Tacoma wheels with a +30mm offset. I'm telling you there is a spacer behind those wheels or we need a front-on picture and there is a ton of positive camber...

I’d be tempted to put some new 265/70 17 on there and get an alignment.
