I like this gear oil as it handles severe shockloads like 3500 rpm transbrake launches

Yeah, but does that make it functionally better for a vehicle that doesn’t see 3500rpm transbrake launches?

Yes because it's designed for both High Performance and Commercial applications which reduces shock loads

    • High-performance, extreme high-pressure gear lube
    • Multi-purpose applications including manual transmissions and both conventional and posi-traction differentials
    • Contains special "clinging" agents that provide direct adhesion to all moving parts whereas conventional lubes rely on "splashing and sloshing" to distribute lubricant
    • Increased speed of rotating parts causes continuous film of oil to "climb" and spread over surfaces
    • Insures complete lubrication of gears, bearings, bushings, shift yokes, synchros, etc.

Is that *demonstrably* better for our non-commercial, non-racing vehicles than the claims of other oils? And on what do you base that?

    for instance, over at mobil1:

I use redline. My truck calls for 75w-85 according to the owners manual. Its either redline or Toyota and I can source redline from the summit racing warehouse 15 minutes from my house

I found a batch of Amsoil severe gear diff oil for $8.00/qt at my local Coastal so I ran that for my last change. I think next time I’ll run Redline and see how it holds up.

ECGS has a good write up on which gear oil to run - in short, just change it with something that meets spec and when you’re supposed to. You’ll be fine.

Do not put 5w-30 in your diffs. Period. Engine oil is not the same as differential gear oil

I use AMSOIL Severe Gear 75w90 because it costs more it gives me a sense of elitism over other Tacoma owners. Also it tastes good & is less filling which is important to me for a balanced diet (also pairs well with cheeseburgers).

If you listen to an Amsoil rep they will tell you you can brush your teeth with the stuff.

They wouldn't be wrong (technically), however you can also brush your teeth with raw sewage. Neither are probably good ideas. But yeah I brush my teeth with Amsoil.

3 in 1 works for motor, transmission, differential, all 3. So I only need to buy one kind of oil since I’m easily confused. No brainer, dump it in. No thinking if I grabbed the correct bottle.

I use Lucas gear oil in my diffs just cause that's what ECGS recommends. As for my trans and transfer case I run Redline

Why not use 4 in 1 so you’re good for the transmission fluid change, too?

Because of the transaxle sharing fluids from diff to tranny, it greatly complicates things

This is what I'm going to do. Have the MTL for the tyranny and transfer case, picked up Lucas 75w-90 for the diff

A little of this and a little of that.
Redline is good for the differentials.
