After looking at some of the crazy high prices of the Pelican and ROAM rooftop cargo boxes it got me thinking... is there any reason I couldn't build one out of ply? I've never seen a wooden cargo box and I'm just wondering if I'm missing something.

Any examples of people trying this successfully or otherwise?

My dad made his roof rack with wood slats for a VW Dasher station wagon.

You can probably make one yourself for the Tacoma.

My family's camping vehicle in the mid-1970s was a Pinto station wagon. My father built a plywood box, about 5FT x 2Ft x 2Ft. The box outlasted the Pinto. It was later installed on a Datsun wagon. I now realize that a nice Pelican case would have made the Pinto and Datsun even cooler:cool: I'd share a picture, but the only ones are probable on a slide, and I don't know how to upload from one of those:D

What do you intend to store in said box? Have you looked at harbor freight tools hard cases?

Mostly just miscellaneous camping supplies. Stuff that I don't use as often as the stuff in my drawer system. So we've got 1 successful box on a pinto! That's reassuring.
I haven't looked into the harbor freight boxes. Those aren't crazy prices, but I think I might wants something a little larger.

Nothing makes a pinto station wagon cool. (especially when you have to drive it in highschool)

    LOL
    I hear you on that.

I was a high school senior class of 1998. My dad gives me a 1978 VW Dasher wagon that he bought for like $300 and he painted it Ferrari red since he worked at a body shop and he thought it looked cool.
I would park it blocks away from school.

Only cool thing was that the rear seats would fold down…..:D

With the going price of wood, I might steal it. :D

I actually think that's a cool idea. Do a nice looking wood and stain it.

Check the customer pictures on HF's site. They have pics of one mounted on a Tacoma.

Every once and awhile, they show up at Sam's Club for less than $100. I think wood and hardware would cost more.

Yup. They are nice units lots of space. Wish they had modular slots for organizing but still nice.
