So correct... there's the evaporator core I mentioned. That's where the smells and fungus live.

I've looked everywhere to find a way to get my AC NOT to default to max everytime I start it then having to push the max AC button turning off max AC this thread started out with the exact question I have then it somehow got derailed to smelly.

Let's try this again HOW DO I STOP MY 2018 TACOMA FROM DEFALTING TO MAX AC EVERYTIME I START IT?

The system defaults to recirc when the outdoor temperature is above something like 72 degrees F. Below that temp, the recirc should not come on automatically unless it was selected manually before the truck was last shut off.

    Really?

That's honestly the first answer I'll buy

That makes sense to me I guess I'm going to have to wait till it cools of to verify

Now I need to find a dealer that I haven't burned to the ground from letting the entire world know I'm not in the slightest bit satisfied with the service department having tech's that couldn't screw on a valve stem cap without crossthreading it if there lives depended on it........ALL of them are absolute RETARDS

OR I need to buy, rent, pay soneone to get my hands on this techstream thing you speak of

WTF is a "techstream" anyway a dealer service device? If that's the case I guess I'll have to Deal with my AC the way it's programmed now or next time I'm in a area I haven't sampled the service department (Or lack of service department) and having a couple hundred bucks to blow having my floor mats inspected while I spend the next 4 hours drinking cold coffee in the customer waiting area watching CNN (yuckkk) while they go through my personal belongings........Yea that sounds fun as a fucking colonoscopy

    I'll pass

This is correct. As far as I know, there is no way to change this setting.

I believe this to be true. Living in Florida the temp rarely gets really low anyway and if it was below 72 I wouldn't use the AC I would open the windows and do a happy dance. I have seen my truck NOT default to recirculate so the temperature theory holds water for me anyway. I would be astounded if Toyota built a setting in the CPU Brain that cared about the default setting enough to be able to change it...but one never knows I suppose.

This truck taught me the value of the recirculation button. It is more efficient as well. Nothing like it being 90 out and your truck has turned your automatic HVAC setting down to the 2nd fan level and it's still comfortable.

As for the funky AC smell, I find I only get that the first couple of times using the AC for the year. After that it dries out and I never get it again for the rest of the year.

that's not true. the musty smell is from the condensation building up in your A/C ducts and mold loves high moisture levels. I doubt the cabin filter has anything to do with the smell. they do get pretty dirty though.

I've wondered about this too but it never bothered me enough to do any research on how to change it. But it sounds like this is a pretty common feature these days and I guess it does make sense.

Y'all seriously complaining about having to reach over and push a button once?

Man 3rd genners are just built different.

Dunno if it's the same but my second gen after I reset from disconnecting the battery will default to open air when I much much prefer recirculate and even if you press recirculate it will only recirculate for about 5 minutes then switch back to open intake unless you hold the button down for 1 full minute then it will forever stay on what you actually set it to, you might try that.

Man I miss my first gen with manual cable levers, whatever you set it to there it was no techno babble self thinking bull shit.

It's not that I'm a lazy ass it's mostly because I forget to switch it from max (recirculation) to fresh every time I jump into it smoking a blunt thus causing an odor of burnt "tree" for the next month inside then having to explane the smell to my probation officer friends every time we go fishing

    There not buying my story
