The best truck bed setup for traveling with a German Shepherd?

I fold my back seat down for my two dogs. It pretty much stays like that permanently. I recently added some padding to the back panels of the seats using the garage foam mats. I removed the panels and cut out each mat to fit in the indentation. I used double sided tape to secure them. This gives them some grip and just a little bit of cushion. Usually on long road trips I'll throw their blankets back there.

Like everyone else has stated, they are giant fur bombs. I probably vacuumed out a whole Pomeranian yesterday after our weekend road trip.

 

Not trying to start a debate here but IF your dog is riding in the bed of the truck, they really should be in a kennel/crate to prevent them from getting banged up while riding around as well as to keep them from being seriously hurt or killed in the event of an accident. If your dog is too large for any decent kennel/crate, (as is the case with my great dane), then in the backseat clipped in to some type of tether would be the next best thing. Again, not trying to tell people what to do, just a PSA.

 

Thats the ONLY spot. Easily sucked up or I use a pet stone.

I would post pics of the back seat of my Taco dog hair but too ashame lol. I have a hammock which the hair sticks to it and have to take it out and hang it in the wind to blow off the hair with water hose. I did the mistake of opening all the windows hoping the dog hair would blow out bit unfortunately it blew all over the inside of the cab lol. Carpet and electronics are magnets for dog hair. Quite the job to vacuum dog hair off the carpet. Anyone have suggestions how to remove dog from carpeting loll.

 

I also had a German Shepherd who I took everywhere with me as she loved to ride in my truck! What I did though, was to simply remove the passenger seat, which unbolts with 4 bolts. Then, I obtained some thick foam and cut it to fit in the area from underneath the front dash all the way to the back of the cab, and across the xtracab area. It was a 96 tacoma xtracab. Now this could also be done with a 4door, but just taking the foam back to the rear seat. But anyway, then I covered the foam with one or two towels and then a blanket so the dog could have some comfort. Well, I actually drove with this dog all the way across the country and back in 2005, with her riding in the front seat area on her foam blanket/bed. She loved it and frankly, so did I. I totally recommend anyone to travel across the country with your dog, if he/she is of course, well trained, as mine was. She was SO disciplined, like she had been in the military or something! We stayed in Motel6 or Red Rood Inns, as both welcome your pets to stay in the rooms with you for no additional cost. It was a minor thing for me to stay there, as it was great to have the dog in there with me. But to me, having the dog in the cab is the way to go.

Our GS rides in the back seat ,it's kinda tight but she ok considering that our son soon to be 10 is also in the back seat. We do have Ella in a harness and seat belt thou. She's happy and safe too!

 

Poor kid must be covered in dog hair lol.

Not really...she hardly sheds. She's on raw diet and omega3, her coat is impeccable.

 

I use a backseat hammock in both my
Vehicles, definitely doesn’t contain the fur but it helps. Photo’s after a long weekend of camping, we’re both pretty pooched.

 

Ha! I tried that when i still had my Xterra and Kane would ride in the back, boy was i wrong. Open windows and a shepherd turned into a hair tornado inside the truck.

 

That is the same hammock that I use very durable but does collect dog hair.

 

Omega 3. I should look into that it sure would make my life easier if mine hardly shed cause it is all over the truck, house, clothes etc etc lol

 

This actually works pretty well for getting stubborn hairs from the cloth seats, and really helps agitate dirt/sand from the carpet. Also great for getting the hairs from where the carpet meets the seat posts, and door trims

Ella is a rescue pup, she comes from a native reserve here in Alberta. The foster family that had her for 2 months (no one wanted to adopt her due to her size...a big long girl) said that she came to them skin and bones. They got her back into shape by basically feeding her. We got her in April and she just turned 2 years old 3 weeks ago. We continued with kibbles, all premium grade. She wasn't all that interested in kibbles until we switched her to raw, OMG the transformation. So now she will remind us when it's dinner time, breakfast in the morning then off to work/school we go. Omega 3 she gets is human grade pill but also a raw herring a day, one organic egg (raw) and 1.7lbs of meat a day. She's in great if not exceptional shape. The meat is all hormone free, steroid free, grass fed beef, Bison and kangaroo. Also cage free skinless chicken and fruits and vegetables but not grain!. On top of that she gets goat milk in the morning and chicken bone broth in the evening...can you tell we love her...

 

Most of the time mine ride in the camper shell. But when it is hot they ride in the back seat. I put down two of those black foam interlocking floor pads and then stick a Harbor Freight moving blanket on top of that.
