Report: Ford Truck Sales Continue to Slide Down, But Toyota Tacoma Sales Are on Fire!
    August 4, 2021
    [IMG]
Several manufactures are reporting July 2021 sales results this week. As far as pickup truck sales in the United States are concerned, there is a lot of bad news that is highlighted by some great news from Toyota Tacoma. Take a look.

The Ford sales data comes directly from a Ford sales report. The Toyota truck numbers are provided by the
Good Car Bad Car websitesince Toyota does not make this information easily available. The Honda and Hyundai sales numbers are reported directly by the respective companies. Many other companies on this list report sales on a quarterly (not monthly) basis.

    Full-size Truck U.S. Sales: July 2021
    Model July 2021 July 2020 Change (%)
    GM Trucks (COMBINED)
    n/a
    Ford F-Series 52,314 70,908 -26.2%
    Ram Trucks n/a
    Chevy Silverado n/a
    GMC Sierra n/a
    Toyota Tundra 6,444 9,066 -28.9%
    Nissan Titan n/a
We know that the Ford F-series trucks are significantly affected by the “chip shortage”. Ford is not alone in this struggle as GM, Jeep, and other manufacturers have announced factory shutdowns due to this industry-wide problem. One industry insider tells TFLtruck.com that semiconductor manufacturers are currently prioritizing chip production for consumer electronics, while the automotive industry continues to be seriously constrained.

The aging 2021 Toyota Tundra also saw a significant sales reduction. It’s likely that many Tundra customers are still waiting for more information about the next-generation 2022 Toyota Tundra.

    Mid-size Truck U.S. Sales: July 2021
    Model July 2021 July 2020 Change (%)
    Toyota Tacoma 23,558 17,412 35.3%
    Ford Ranger 5,960 8,993 -33.7%
    GM (COMBINED)* n/a
    Jeep Gladiator n/a
    Chevy Colorado n/a
    Nissan Frontier n/a
    Honda Ridgeline 2,355 2,771 -15.0%
    GMC Canyon n/a
Taking a look at the numbers, the Toyota Tacoma sales continue to be a pleasant surprise. TFLtruck has reached out to Toyota for comment about this tremendous sales growth. The Ford Ranger is seeing a very significant sales slow down. This is also likely due to production constraints.

As a side note, Hyundai USA reports that the company sold 81 new 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz pickups in July 2021 as the company begins production and deliveries of this all-new model.

Toyota was prepared to weather the chip shortage without a loss of production like most automakers.

Not a single Tacoma at the dealer this morning when I had the 10k maint check done on my truck. They had 12 Tundras, 3 4Runners, 2 Camrys, 2 Avalons and 1 Corola.

Tacoma’s all sold out around here except a few Pro’s - and used models from 2014-2018

I'm curious to see if the dealership will even consider buying my taco back when i go in for my first tire roto...

I don't know if they'd even have one for me to trade "up" to.

I think the only way they'd even get me on the offer is for an MT OR...

They might give you an offer lol.

I traded up and they sold my 2017 DCLB with 63k miles for 36k. I paid 35k back in 2017. It’s a crazy market for sure.

My sister lives near Pittsburgh. Last week she picked up my same truck, diff color. That dealer got in 11 that week, and while she was there, they all sold. One dude came in and said he wanted 2, and didn't care what color.

I dont get it. I like the truck, but man, some people ate nuts or just have way more money to burn.

Herb Chambers in Auburn Mass has a ton of Tacoma Trucks. I feel bad for all the saps that are going to pay $10,000 to $15,000 over sticker because they just have to have that new truck. Then when all this shortage stops their vehicle will return to normal value and then they'll lose.

Paying over sticker, they have already lost.

Was at the the toyota dealer yesterday for the 3rd toyotacare visit on my 2020 tacoma...saw about a dozen new tacoma's sitting on their lot. They don't seem short on supply.

It will be interesting to see what August looks like for Tacomas. With the lots nearly empty of them, I'd expect to see their sales to drop off.

Ford has had a lot of issues with commodity constraints. Even going as far as making vehicles then having them sit waiting for a module to show up before shipping. Rough.

I wonder what'll happen to the tacoma sales when all the new hybrid/electric/unibody trucks come out. Ford Maverick, Hyundai Santa Cruz, Tesla Cybertruck, Rivian R1S, GMC Hummer EV

Dunno. They're probably subject to the same supplier shortages as Toyota.

I guess it depends where you are, maybe some dealers are depleted but not here.

Everyone is expecting a price increase.
My dealer had zero Tacoma trucks on the lot.
Leased my 2019 and soon after they offered a lower lease price of $199.
    Silly cheap.
They ordered me a black SR 4x4 in black.
    It gets built this week.
    2.5 % financing for 72 months.
It will be the last VEHICLE I ever buy.
Locking in my price now..who knows what's going on with the economy.

The reason the lot is empty is due to demand, not supply. The pipeline into the Gulf States region and north Texas is pre-sold.
