Why the hell would anyone buy a gen 3 when the oil filter is designed with that cartridge bs. Is the new tundra like that?

That's cool but just thankful I bought a 2014. Dumb luck I guess bc I never new people had to mess with the air damn, skid plate, and cartridge filter just to do routine maintenance.

The dealers gotta love the newer, PITA filter change. Fewer owners will DIY.

The newer style is better for the environment, less metal waste. It's really not that big of a deal to do an oil change, that's how my Kia suv is.

    Cartridge filters aren’t THAT bad.

Don’t forget that the Toyota OEM Denso is literally their cartridge filter (no end caps) in a can.

My Tundra has a cartridge. Its not that complicated. Turn the thingy, replace the thingy, reinstall the thingy. Easier than my 2015 Taco was, at least the filter isnt upside down. :notsure:

What's interesting is the 09 - present 4runners still use the same 1gr-fe 4.0l as the 2nd Gen Tacoma's although it has VVT on both cams instead of just the intake cam but they use the cartridge filter on the bottom instead of the spin on on top like the trucks.

It's because of that change that the oil filter was relocated to the bottom. The heads are different with the dual VVT, and the up top filter assembly no longer fit.

I like the 3rd gen filter set up. It’s very simple after the first time, and way less messy.

That makes sense, it's too bad they didn't put the updated 4.0 in the trucks but instead chose to go with the 3.5.

I don’t think either set up is messy really.

OP would love oil changes on an Audi Q7. In addition to having a cartridge filter, the oil drain plug pours oil all over the subframe making a huge mess.

my main comparison is my old wrangler and the wife’s liberty. Horizontal mounted filters are messy.

Not exactly related to the oil filter question (3G Taco style isn’t that bad), but I took a look at my buddies T4R and noticed the engine was quite different that ours. Different heads, cam system, oil filter location, different intake, headers look different, etc. I’m surprised Toyota classifies them as the same motor outside of the VVT differences.

The current 4.0L is like that as well. No top oil filter on the 4Runner. Quite honestly I'm not sure how effective it is at the top of the engine compared to the bottom.
