Towing enclosed trailer cross country?

Hoping I can get some input here from the community. I have a '15 Tacoma, auto with V6 and towing package. I'm planning on moving from Oregon all the way to the east coast in a few months. I know that probably the smartest thing to do is rent a 15ft uhaul ($5k for 1 way not include gas...) or get a half ton truck but I love my Tacoma to death. Problem is my Tacoma is already kinda overloaded with all the camping/offroading stuff on it. Roughly 6,000lbs fully loaded. Tack onto that the fact that I want to tow a 6x12 or even better a 7x14 enclosed trailer I'm sure it's going to be hurting. Am I pissing into the wind here? I do have Dakar HDs leaf springs and heavy duty front springs as well. I towed my buddys old Corolla on a rented car trailer about 5 hours away and it didn't seem to mind it too much long as I was going 55mph. I did remove my rack/tent and skid plates when I did that though. Do you guys think it would be able to handle it or am I going to hurt my transmission and other stuff attempting to do this. I wish I could just downsize to a bare minimum but I have some larger furniture I just can't get rid of. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Have you looked into towing your truck with their truck?

 

U could rent a U haul box truck for A L L Ur furniture + belongings

put UR taco on a trailer behind 25ft box trailer

hit the road

that will be S L O W also yet NO wear/tear on UR taco

take 2 days off .......maybe 3 & its done

 

As he listed, though, a one way rental was 5K. Sounds like he wanted to avoid that. These days if you can find an enclosed cargo trailer you could prolly sell it for about the same as you purchased it for, making the trailer pretty much free.

I'd prolly want to stick with the 6 foot wide trailer to help with wind resistance. 7 is do-able though (get some mirror extensions).

Yea I've added the cost of towing my truck behind the uhaul into the equation. It's a little over $5,000 for a 15ft uhaul truck with the trailer to tow my Tacoma behind it. Just trying to find cheaper options. That may be my only sensible one though. What I was hoping to do is rent the uhaul 6x12 trailer for $1700 or buy a new trailer, tow it out there and then sell it to recoup my costs.

 

I think the most annoying part with towing with the Tacoma is the fuel range. When towing, I'll see 11 mpg's, so I'll get maybe 200 miles to the tank. Stopping to get gas 4x per day gets old real fast.

I wouldn't worry about the weight. Here's my towing report with my Tacoma at 6000 lbs plus towing my 21 ft travel trailer at 5000 lbs loaded.

 

That sounds promising. The gas breaks are going to be a pain regardless but luckily it's a 1 way trip and only about 4 days of driving.

 

I recently towed a small trailer 5x8 to the dump with my third gen to get rid of a 40ft Palo Verde tree. It took 2 trips and I went through town. Getting up to speed wasn't really a problem, but I didn't feel comfortable going any faster than about 55, because I wasn't confident in the stock brakes. Trailer brakes would have been ideal, but I told myself next time I tow anything heavier or for a longer distance I'm getting a bigger truck.

What you're planning on towing and the distance you plan on going is a lot for any vehicle.

 

Having burned up a tranny in my first taco (1st gen) pulling too much I'd be wary of over working your truck. That said I can empathize with not wanting to cough up 5k for a uhaul. Though that seems steep.

 

Agreed. Towing my buddys car 5 hours away didn't seem that bad, even going up the mountain passes. Truck did definitely not like going over 55 though. Getting up to 55 was actually not bad.

 

That seems to be the average price these days for a 2500 mile 1 way trip. It's brutal.

It's almost exactly 2500 miles. In June I did a 6.5k mile trip driving around the country. That was a lot of driving....

 

Yea they and other POD services would be ideal. All $7k plus though.

 

Your truck can do it and the only real problem will be the fuel economy. I towed all the way from Alaska to Washington with my truck weighing 6480lbs and a trailer that was about 3500lbs. After that I drove the trans-america trail with the truck still weighing almost 6500lbs.

 

You're already overloaded by about 500-600 lbs before you add the tongue weight of a trailer.
