So, I was driving doing about 50, hit a pothole that I couldn’t avoid, it blew the tire and then pointed me in the direction of a Jersey barrier. I luckily was able to pull the truck back onto the road without causing any body damage but the tire was wrecked. Anyone else have tire damage this bad? I’ve never seen anything like it.

Did the sidewall of the tire impact anything like a concrete barrier??

If not that almost looks like a manufacturing flaw in the sidewall.

You’ve been Cooper’d!!! I just pulled my XLT’s off my truck. 28k miles and they were getting useless.

That’s some big chucks out of the sidewall.

My daughters “hold my beer” moment. This lead to a 2550.00 tire replacement on all four corners.

OP. Unless you have a "Road Hazard Warranty" on the tires........ you're SOL.

Send the picture of the tire, rim and pothole with location to the local DOT. I doubt if they'd provide any relief, but they might fill the pothole.

Old tire....sudden blow out at decent speed...tire sidewall wrinkles due to loss of air pressure....wheel/tire hits barrier and the wrinkled parts are sheared off against the barrier...story checks out.

I'm glad it wasn't worse for you and your truck!

I’m lucky I run 1.25” spacers, if I didn’t the entire side of my truck would have been destroyed. I have a small abrasion scratch on my left front fender flare and that’s it. I consider the $1600 for alignment and 4 new tires a great deal because it could have been much much worse. I contacted the DOT and they’re going to fill the pothole but they said there’s nothing they can do to compensate for the damage.

Normal DOT response. Well, maybe you saved someone else from a worse outcome.

This happened on Tuesday, I contacted them Wednesday and drove past the spot today, still not filled. I drive past most days so I’ll keep you guys updated on when DOT goes and fills it. I might do myself a favor and go toss a bag of quikcrete in it.

Not Quikrete.......use a bag of Dunkin' Donuts.

Gotta have enough for the "Fill Crew". Truck Driver, sign holder, 2 shovel people and supervisor......plus 1 spare person just in case.

OP, it might take a while to fill the pothole. I drove by today and took a pic of it.

Try your insurance, depending on what you have, it could be covered, especially if it was road related.

the damaged areas are VERY consistent measurement wise from each other which is quite interesting.

I was a passenger in a car where the driver hit a pot hole on the highway hard enough for the shock to fade, which probably does not take much. The tire was fine, maybe due to the minimal amount of side wall. I did see the pot hole at a latter time, it was a clean cut made by a saw. That could have also been a factor.

That’s what I thought too, it’s so strange that the tire failed in that pattern, almost as is the sidewall construction has something to do with the damage to the tire
