I have a 2012 regular cab 2.7 auto 4x4. I am pretty sure it has the 4.10 gears. Currently running 245/75/17. Thinking of regearing to 4.56 or 4.88. What is everyone’s opinion on which gears would be best. It is my daily driver and is terrible on the interstate when going up hill or passing. What rpms is everyone running at highway speeds. Currently running around 2400 at 75 mph

I would go 4.88 if you plan to stick with 33s or smaller. If any bigger, 5.29s are the way to go. You do have 4.10s so I wouldn’t think going to 4.56 would make enough of a difference to justify the cost. I’m running 5.29s and 295/70R17s and I turn about 3300 at 75mph. Turning 80mph is pushing 3500rpms but I no longer do the 4-5 5-4 dance on the hwy anymore

Any ideas how 4.88 would be with the auto tranny on 265/75r16 or 33s or OPs stock tires? I've run some calculators, but I am not convinced.

Itll be geared 20% lower than stock in all gears with stock tires with 4.88 gears, putting on bigger heavier tires with a regear will help get some of the lost acceleration and power back. I have 265/75 on mine and it's for sure more peppy than stock. My truck is a 5 speed and it's no hot rod for sure but its adequate for me. The only auto I drove was a 5 lug truck with 3.30 something gears and it was a dog off the line, not sure on the lower geared 4x4 models.
What is it you want to be convinced of?

I haven't seen many actual user reports comparing the different ratios and also using the 2TR-FE with A340f transmission. So I'm making my decision almost entirely off of calculations and I prefer to have a good mix of numbers and anecdotal reviews before I commit.

The 2.7 is pretty gutless below 2300 rpm but starts to really scream above 3300 or so and I don't want to overshoot or undershoot my gearing since it's my DD and I use it to tow a small trailer a couple times a week.

You might consider just trading in on a v6 2nd gen or 3rd gen 4cyl with the 6 spd auto. The new 6 speed auto has a really low first gear and 4.30 rear gears I believe. By the time you spend the money to do front and rear diffs you might could just take the money from that and spend it on a upgrading to something like that.

My truck is paid off and I'm not into more payments. Plus sales tax and licensing in addition to new bigger tires, lift and everything else just to get the new truck to where I'm at already? I'll just pay few grand for a regear. Not sure how that works out as a better way especially since I'd regear the V6 anyway when I do a locker or something similar... like I'm planning to do now lol

On another note, does the 6 spd bolt up to the 2nd gen 2trfe?

I imagine it would bolt up to the engine, not sure on the rear mount. Probably would be a major headache getting it actually working well with all the electrical stuff in the truck and trans
