On Friday, I wanted to try the airbox mod before our Saturday road trip to see if it netted better mpg or throttle response.

First thing was to remove the snow baffling. (in the airbox, I didn't get a pic, so here's the one of the internet)

And what the intake looks like without it:

next was to take the front scoop apart (it’s a partially closed intake from the factory) and you can see here that it directs air right into the bottom of the airbox

    122B6214-4E88-4ED2-9B56-05B541BC2B07.jpg

here’s the driver’s side, you can see it’s blocked off

    7CFA7B3C-248B-4A6C-8CCB-A4EE50092144.jpg

So you open it up to let more air in

    Finished part:

The backside of the trimmed piece:

    Here is the passenger side

    7AC73A0A-7214-49AA-9859-83A27AD55582.jpg

and here is the now open driver’s side

    33B8ACE1-A974-4E44-B169-E83AF2D555E4.jpg

I sanded everything and hit it with some back to black restorer to make everything look shiny again.

This took maybe an hour including cleaning up the mess and the test drive. I didn’t drive the car enough before the mod to notice and mpg improvements but throttle response is definitely better. And I can kinda here the turbo spool a little bit, which is neat. Pretty stoked with this free mod.

Also, this mod is supported by science!

I also made some impromptu buys spurred by a used part and more research from here:

I snagged this for less than half shipped but I hate the blue: https://www.ecstuning.com/b-forge-p...f6bpQZLqWgl2VCecNiohPpNaAUp6uLixoCpooQAvD_BwE

So I had to order a high flow panel filter to fully benefit from the rest of the changes:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CR9WWN0?ie=UTF8

And I ordered some hot boi gold reflective tape to be used on the turbo inlet pipe to hide the gross blue. If it works great, if it doesn't NBD too.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08XT1PCD8?ie=UTF8

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxUBz7MkiAA

Also, I'm going to wrap my intake on my Tacoma with this stuff to try and help with the heat soak in the engine bay.

So basically for the fraction of a full on intake you can mod the stock one to get basically the same airflow with no heat soak issues.

    Forge Motorsports intake arrived!

    9088B542-077C-4437-B51A-09E4D5AF2A12.jpg

got it used and it looks like the previous owner might’ve cut it short for some reason

    52BF6C0E-E51E-4EF0-B70A-9A5DAA2207FD.jpg

I was able to make it work without any leaks, so I proceeded to the next step!

So I hate the blue, especially as my car is blue.

    Hot boi reflective gold tape!

oh, and I put a K&N drop in filter too. I can now hear the turbo a lot better and it does feel quicker on the butt dyno. I also need less pedal to get off the line. Overall love the results!

Purchase a strut knuckle spreader (I'll assume the Mk 7s have the same set-up at the 6s) if you don't have one. Couple different versions floating around. Just Google and buy.

It's been in a cart since before I bought the car lol.

I have to buy triple square sockets and a few other odds and ends as well, but man this thing is fun to drive.

Haha! I have all of those random tools too! Don't forget to get a set of security torx bits too.

And set up your VCDS stuff... seriously. LOL!

Man... I hate doing suspension on VWs. Stupid knuckle spreader. Anyways, I used two flat head screwdrivers to spread it.

    VCDS stuff? like this? https://www.ecstuning.com/b-obdelev...1GNgo5b0djklk9c4n8ArlOILBuS3M7uRoCI0cQAvD_BwE

And I know, I almost bought a used JB1 tune but I'm too timid to tune it because once it's tuned there goes any warranty. And I care about the warranty as I never had a Euro car and from what I've read it's a PITA to work on if major stuff goes wrong

I have no idea how you used two screwdrivers to spread the strut knuckle! Even with the correct tool I fight. I own three of them. Yes. Three.

Neiko sells a set of triple squares on Amazon that work well. And prepare to purchase more specialty tools. I have a cabinet full.

No problem! They're good people. And the software is constantly updated. You can do some cool stuff with it. Mess with lighting, etc. I'm sure someone has posted what you can do on Vortex.

I already made a vortex account and have a ton of threads I'm going through now.

Hmm... that tool from ECS wasn't available back in my day! LOL!

The burger stuff should be fine. It's a piggyback that goes between connectors. So it doesn't change the mapping in the ECU.
