Replace Transfer Case Oil 1.1QT? 1.0QT? Use old oil?

Afternoon

I want to change out my Transfer Case oil. It shows that I need 1.1 QT. Of course, it comes in 1.0QT cans for $80!

So other than buying 2 cans for $160 and having 0.9 sitting around, can I put in just 1.0? Can I save 0.1 from the old oil and use it? Any good alternatives people are using?

It comes in 1 litre cans; or 1.06 quarts.
I bought two; only needed one.

 

Just buy two and pour whatever is left over, out for the homies.

 

The two most popular alternatives are Ravenol MTF-3 and Redline MT-LV.

 

I (metal) can of the genuine Toyota stuff filled mine completely so it drizzled out the fill plug.

 

I don't see why not. It will be well diluted with the new oil being added. I plan to do that myself when it's time. It's a little silly to buy 2 quarts when all you need is 1.1 quarts

 

75W90 synthetic just like the diffs. Keep it simple. It’s good to know if you get in a pinch you can also use WS in it and get home. Basically any gear oil manual tranny oil or atf will get you home.
If you have a quart of that 75W you can always top it off with some gear oil if it is low.
It’s a transfer case Some gears and chain with electronic actuators (in most current cases)not a complicated Auto tranny or CVT. Any of these fluids at the right level is superior to not enough.

there’s two reasons I change my diff oil and transfer case oil.
1-water emulsion. If I do stupid things like water crossings even if I install breathers a hot pumpkin in a cold water means I should change the lube soon.

The other reason is oxidation and or additive depletion. Eventually the EP additives become depleted and the oil begins to turn and oxidize. I don’t like going excessively far primarily thinking of the moving parts with an e locker and axle seals.
If no water emulsion worries I usually go 50-75k depending on towing, speed shock loads etc.

 

You forgot the gerotor pump and synchro.

Its a 1 liter can. 1 liter = to 1.1 US quart rounded.

 

Just curious why you’re changing the xfer case oil alone and not the diffs. Do all three at once and you have cleaner math..

 

As others have said 1 liter is basically 1.1 quart.
But that 1.1 quart is to replace a dry transfer case.
When draining a transfer case, we get most of the old oil out but never all of it, so if it calls for 1.1 quart, one quart will usually fill it due to residual oil still in the case.
When I replaced it on my 2019, the one can filled it and I used the expensive Toyota stuff.
Bought two cans because I had the same concern, so now I am ready when my 21 news new oil.

 

$80 per can? What am I missing?

I've been using 75W90 dino gear oil in my xfer case and both differentials at about $8.99 per quart (x6 qts) every 30k since the truck was new. I'm pretty sure that is what was recommended when I was doing my research.

A side note: no auto part store that I've ever been in had enough in stock to do all 3. Since AutoZone does their reward program based on the number of times you spend $20, I just use that to get me over the mark whenever I buy something else. That way I'm stocked up and ready to go. I've since found it online for cheaper, but that is one option.

FWIW, I do most of my own maintenance. Truck was bought new and is sitting at 167k miles.

 

I hesitate to ask but oh what the hell: what’s up with the conversation on liters? Every available gear oil brand that I’ve ever looked at available here in the good ole USA comes in quarts. Perhaps some of you on the the thread are logging in from Canada, eh? Or the UK? Just curious.

 

Toyota 75W transfer gear oil is sold in litres. I believe it's made in Japan by ExxonMobil .
Yes, it's $60-80/litre.

Side note: usage of “litre” vice “liter” requires a cup of tea (and your pinky) held aloft whilst speaking or typing.

 

That's 75W90 GL5 hypoid gear oil. The Toyota stuff is a straight 75W GL4; closer to a manual transmission fluid than gear oil.

 

This is one of the things Toyota changed on the third gen from the second gen.

 

Yeah, just buy one can. I did and it was enough.

 

Seems like a fairly critical change from 2nd gen to 3rd gen.

2nd gen specifies API GL-5, SAE 75W90, 3rd gen specifies the product you posted above, or equivalent SAE 75W. Wonder what changed mechanically. Anyway.
