They changed the formula for towing and for payload. HP and torque is physics and you can't change those. The Tacoma has a shitty payload for sure. Towing is a bit better.
My opinion is that, if they put a traditional suspension on a Tacoma that would be able to handle a respectable payload, it would have a super rough ride when it was unloaded. Funny, the Honda Ridgeline has almost 50% more payload capacity, despite having a smaller tow rating. The Toyota Sienna has 300 lbs more payload than a Tacoma. The Toyota RAV4 has a higher payload rating than the Tacoma. The Ridgeline and the Tundra have similar payload ratings.
However, don't feel bad. The reason that vehicles like the Ridgeline, RAV4 and Sienna all have higher payloads is they are unibody and do not require the articulation for going deep offroad. Jeep Gladiator is similar to Toyota with respect to payloads.

So the downside to being able to go over rough obstacles out in the woods is losing some ability to make heavy Home Depot runs. And, if you have a crew cab, being able to haul zero gear if you have four burly dudes in the truck lol.

That helps, my wife's Kona has a higher load rating than the Tacoma, that being said about the burley guys would put the taco over limit. But it would be fun to pull people over site then for safety violation and force someone out on the street,.

So, more times I haul stuff than tow I've put on as much as 1400+ on my '19 SR. I've been tempted to put helpers on, but most to cover their backside will not certify the extra weight. A full leaf change or a bag. I try to get the load evenly distributed. I usually have a hitch hauler on also but this time is was more noticeable than in the past.

Just food for thought, would have been better to compare a single cab Tacoma with your single cab Chevy, last one was in 2014 and came in at 190" long? Seems like something like this would have been a better comparison as far as size goes.

Dude, I drove a 1994 I believe Chevy pick up with a 454 and a 5 spd with a granny gear. It made about 400 torque at 1600 rpm, it was one of the best driving experiences I’ve ever had.

Those things were tanks! I did roofing in my teen years and our boss had one, those trucks were beasts.

As long as you were ok with 7-8 MPGs though, haha!

Yeah they were good solid trucks, lousy mileage for sure. When I was a kid my friends Dad had one and was the chief of police, someone took a shot at him one day. I remember seeing where the bullet went up the hood and then jumped over the windshield and hit the roof, he obviously was having a lucky day!

    Haha! I believe that.

Yeah, they don’t stamp the steel like they used to.

Fun story, I had a paintless dent removal guy do a dent for me and he said Toyota, Mercedes and Honda have the best quality steel.

    Pic for attention.

For sure, I was amazed. I did have to remove the wheel liner because the price was cheaper that way.

It was super interesting to me as I hone, polish and restore marble/travertine/limestone etc at work. The guy had a black strip in his light to make sure the surface was smooth in the reflection, very cool idea.

Always better to save a few bucks if you can, l like watching people do things like that too as you can always learn something. The PDR guys l was watching on Youtube had lights for reflection too, one even put up an umbrella to shield the sun.
