I have finally had enough Irritating issues with my 2020 TRD OR. From transmission gear hunting all the time, un-usable cruise control (related to transmission gear hunting), Incessant diff. whine Between 50-60 mph, And now I'm hearing the engine around 2100 rpm sounding like I have jingle bells attached under the hood. At 27K miles, Thats it. It has been traded in . I have removed the one saving grace that I added (shift sense module) and said adios to the POS. Right now trade in values are insane.

I just got a 2019 sr5 that only had 7500 miles on it, and I noticed it right away. Can only hear it if radio is completely off, happens around 50-60 mph and only when I take my foot off the gas. I've got an AT, it howls almost constantly when I'm in cruise control too. super annoying, pretty bummed when I found out that it was going on.

Creating an account for anyone in the future.
2021 TRD OR got a howl at around 300-500 miles. Howl is noticeable at 53-57mph with light to moderate use of the accelerator. It also is very loud when breaking down to that range and coming back onto the accelerator. Took it in this morning at 1k and had a tech drive it with me. He heard the howl and diagnosed it within a minute. Rear Diff. Opened a complaint ticket, and noted that the field rep would be in the area in two weeks. Truck is obviously fine to drive, but stated they will more than likely replace the rear differential. They may replace it sooner if the field rep doesn't want to come in to look at it.

I also noticed that there is an open tech ticket for 2020/2021 rear diff howls with this exact procedure.
    T-TT-0651-21

Update: Tech called back. Regional Rep said Toyota is aware of the issue and working on a solution. He recommended to continue to drive the vehicle until the rep would arrive two weeks from now. Currently there is no guarantee that replacing the rear diff will permanently get rid of the howl.

Mine makes some noise, no doubt about it. But it's not very loud nor does it scream "I'm dying now, right now, I'm dying...stick a fork in me I'm done dying now".

More of a slight noise here and there mostly when I let off the skinny pedal, long down hill. I can hear something. Maybe not even 100% rear diff.

Mine makes a whirring whistle sound. Didn’t start it till after my 5k service. Took it back to them a couple weeks later and they couldn’t reproduce the sound. I tried to take someone with me but I could only get the service advisor and he said he doesn’t hear the greatest. Lol!

Be aware, The dealer changing out the rear diff usually doesn't guarantee a fix. I found a dealer that told me the whine wasn't normal and they changed it out after I informed them of the rear diff lub being 1.2 quarts low from toyota. They told me that the pinion bearing bearing was prob ruined because of low fluid. This dealer also was denied by toyota to change it because of the whine be "Normal" designation,,,, from toyota. The low fluid level got me the new diff. All was good for 900 miles. Then the whine returned. If you read all the posts on this topic you will find some unfortunate souls that went this route only to end up in a worse situation with the whine being much worse. YMMV. Best of luck and I hope you are happy with the "fix".
The guaranteed fix, Take "real Moondog" advise as I did, when you have had enough, and can no longer tolerate it, get rid of it.

Have my SR into the dealer for rear diff howl noise: Dealer to replace carrier assembly including rear diff. Quoted at $2,500 but Covered under the 5 year 60,000. I appreciate that the dealer and tech chose to replace the assembly, unlike some other dealers I heard about on this thread.

2018 4X4 dbl cab, 33,000 miles. Howling at about 40mph and above while feathering. Sometimes howling with different pitches during highway driving. Howling started about two months ago. Nothing too loud. Stock truck. Other than a Curt front receiver & A/T tires on stock rims.

Bought used back in January. Light/moderate use only, mostly highway. Some slow and steady off-roading. Occasional utility trailer towing.

I am disappointed that the truck needs such a major repair early in its life. This just feels like something a Ford would do. I am hoping to have this truck for many years.

It should be done no later than Friday. I will give an update if I find out exactly what the issue was.

Any thoughts? Will the new diff come with a new 60,000-mile warranty?

I got a new diff at like 6k miles and the new diff noise was worse, like double bad. At which point Toyota told me it’s “normal”.

I also had the TSB which helped a little.

I’m closing in on 70k miles now and no failure yet.

It comes and goes now and no where near as loud. Still annoying but I have no worries about failure.

It’s a bummer and I believe will definitely effect resale (if that’s a plan) but I wouldn’t worry about failure.

Had rear dif, carrier assembly etc replaced yesterday. Hit the highway and while the noise is not nearly as bad, it still exists when feathering/ letting off the throttle right at 55mph. Previously it was very loud from 52-57 when lightly on the throttle- so driving highways was terrible. So far, i can travel at 55 on cruise without hearing it so thats a big improvement. Sucks that its still there, but one bit at a time. Dealer said they would contact me today after speaking to the rep again and see where to go from here.

I wouldn't mess with it again , it's under the 60k warranty so see how it goes .

Haven't read every single post here but Mopar makes an LS additive that I have added to LS gear oil when clutches in a LS differential were a little grabby.
Don't know if this will quiet your howl.
My 2008 TRD Sport had a bum rear end and the dealer replaced it at 30k miles.
They tried to tell me it was something I i did(?). but after fighting with them they replaced it.
    Just my 2 cents

Solutions have been posted and people appear to be too lazy to search them out.

It’s a resonance coming from the rear diff and traveling through your leaf springs to the frame and into the cab. Buy a different rear leaf spring setup and the resonance will no longer make its way into the cab. Think of it like the leaf springs being a tuning fork. Strapping more metal to it will stop or dampen the tone. Swapping diffs has a slim chance of fixing anything. It’s not a bearing failing.

Anyone in here with Icon RXT, OME Dakar, Deaver or Alcan leaf springs notice the noise after spring install?

I have the original leaf springs. Once I coated them with Wool Wax, along with the rest of the undercarriage, the howl stopped.

Same here. Well I used Amsoil HDMP on the leafs. Pretty sure people called me nuts BUT I am also pretty sure it didn't work for everyone, well maybe some/most/many didn't try it.
