Fuel gauge won't work after replacing tank

Hello, my name is RON and I like working on my own vehicles such as the 2017 Toyota Tacoma I'm about to inquire here. I have fixed and worked on many different types of vehicle through my lifetime. I am now retired and have plenty of time to fix cars.

Recently someone stole my gas from my Tacoma. How did they do it? Well, as you all know Tacoma don't have a lock fuel cap and you cannot put a house down through the tube because it has a metal filter before it hits the gas. So, the only way to steel the gas is by drilling a hole at the bottom of the tank (Since Toyota decided to put a cheap plastic gas tank).

So, I went and got a use tank at a wrecking yard, however after installing the new tank the fuel gauge is acting crazy. After I filled the tank, gauge mark 0 or it won't move. After a week the gauge goes to 1/2 a tank.

Does anyone knows if there is something to reset after changing the fuel tank?

I haven't been able to identified the Fuel Fuse in the engine fuse box or the inside fuse box.
I cannot simply find the fuse so I can test it.

    That's my story for now.

Thank you and hope to find someone with similar problem.

    Ron

    Yeah.
Welcome, Ron. When you swapped the new tank in, did you swap to your original fuel pump or did you replace the tank, fuel pump and all? Fuel sender is pretty simple, just a float and a resistor strip.

No, I only replace the tank, everything else is the same (fuel pump and attachments).

    Yeah.
It's eventually registering, so I don't think you have a fuse issue. Sounds like the float got hung up on something, or maybe the arm got bent when installing the pump assembly.

I once had a similar issue after having a fuel pump replaced. The way it was explained to me the tank and pump were
not “keyed” in any way and you could turn the module to any position you wanted prior to tightening the big ring on top of the tank. The mechanic had it turned such that the float would hit the tank side. It would work intermittently, like the tank would bow out when full and free the float.

This was a Dodge, don’t know about the Tacoma.

    Yeah.
Good call. I believe the Tacoma pump is keyed so it only goes in one way, though, so tank baffles won't interfere with the float.

Stealing gas?... has it come to that ?... times are tough but employers are screaming for workers. Not sure about the rest of you but
there are easier ways to make a buck to pay for a little gas.

Fuel shut off active on your donor? Was the donor vehicle flipped?
