Lower Ball Joint Part Numbes

Sorry to bother everyone with what should be a simple question. I have been looking online and searching the forum, but for the life of me I cannot confirm what lower ball joints I need for my 2001 Xtra Cab 4WD TRD.

If I go to Camelback Toyota and select 2001 Tacoma Base I get two numbers for each side:
Right: 43330-39556 & 43330-39565
Left: 43340-39436 & 43340-39445

When I spent an hour on the phone with the local dealership, they also had the same two nimbers. They had no idea why there were two numbers and eventually had me use the frst numbers but admitted he was really just taking a 50:50 chance.

From researching the forums it looks like I need

$202 Toyota Genuine Parts - Joint Assy, Lwr Ball (43330-39815)

43330-39815 (right) and (

$202 Toyota Genuine Parts - Joint Assy, Lwr Ball (43340-39585)

43340-39585) left. When I enter these into the Camelback site I get a warning that they will not fit my vehicle.

Can someone please help confirm what I need? Truck is new to me and I do not know when they were last done.

Thanks! Those were the numbers I was going with based on the forums. Not sure why Camaleback and my local dealership come up with the others.

 

Here are the ones Gunny from Camelback provided me. But he had a separate number for the bolts. Maybe that’s the difference? The other numbers come with bolts

On my '02, I used 43330-39556 (passenger side) and 43340-39436 (driver side). Keep in mind that these do not come with the 4 mounting bolts they each need. And you really should not reuse your old mounting bolts. Get new ones. I don't have the part numbers for the OEM bolts but I'm sure someone on here will be able to give that to you.

Do your lower ball joints have a protective rubber outer boot cover over the ball joint's grease pouch? If they do they are the same as mine were and that outer boot cover is designed to be reused and they also are designed to use the mounting bolts with a captured washer, not a flange bolt. Why is this important? As mentioned, there are other options available. For instance, LBJs for models without the protective boot use a flanged head bolt (no captured washer). OEM LBJs for older model 1st gens came with this type of bolt.

Another option is to not reuse that outer protective boot. This allows you to use a flanged head bolt. This is the route I went.

A set of OEM Toyota LBJs just arrived with all the other small parts I needed for some unexpected MTX on my '97 TACO 4WD. I was reading conflicting info on whether these OEM LBJs came with the bolts or not. Each LBJ comes with the 4 flanged bolts (90080-10066), nut, cotter pin required for installation all packaged together. .02

 

No conflict; it's been posted that those come with the bolts.

Even have it in my sig and others have posted it as well.

 

If you end up using the 90119-10933 bolts, the torque spec is 37 ft-lbs.

So it appears that the main difference is whether the LBJ comes with the bolts or not and that the numbers suggested here do come with the flanged head bolts. Do they have the rubber boot on them?

My current ones have the rubber boot which should not be moved and reused with the LBJs that have the flanged head bolt.

Did I get that right?

The rubber boot you refer to is a LBJ Protector 43346-60011, often referred to as a dust boot. It is a separate part from the LBJ. If it is in good shape, it can be reused if you want. And when using the LBJ Protector, you need to use the longer black bolt w washer 90119-10933. That is the reason I specified the 90080-10066 part number of the flanged bolts included with my LBJs above. 90080-10066 is simply the superseded p/n for the 90105-10406 flanged LBJ bolt. Those flanged bolts are not designed to be used with the LBJ protector which was factory installed on TACOs starting in or around Sept 2000 IIRC. The 2 LBJs I show in my post are correct for my '97 TACO because it did not come from the factory with the LBJ Protectors and I have not retrofitted them to my LBJs. But the LBJs I show are not exactly correct for your 2001 because of the flanged bolts included. That is probably why the camelback website flagged them on you. If you want to eliminate the LBJ Protectors, then you can use the flanged bolts supplied with the LBJs I show in my post. Everything I read indicates that the LBJ attachment is stronger with those shorter flanged bolts torqued to 59 FT./lbs. If you want to retain the LBJ Protectors as installed by the factory on your 01 TACO, it appears that you need to order the LBJs without the bolts and purchase the 90119-10933 longer black bolts with washers separately. Look at Sicyota4's post above. That looks to be the exact parts you need for your 01 TACO. Check it out with camelback, toyotapartsdeal, or whoever you buy your parts from so you get it right the first time. HTH.

I've seen that the LBJ part numbers for 2001 - 2004 Tacomas are different than the part #s for earlier years, even though the LBJ is the same. But the bolts required are different due to the dust boot

If you don't reuse the dust boot (or get a new one) and use the wrong bolt you'll break it off in the spindle, been there done that and it's not fun

 

The only thing I would add to your thorough assessment is to use a dab of blue (242) loctite on each bolt and torque to 59 ft/lbs.

Happy to help. There is some question as to which LBJ bolt type or types were used by the factory to attach the LBJ with the LBJ Protector. LBJ bolts are discussed here: lower ball joint bolts why so many | Tacoma World. The factory may have used both the 10505 flanged bolt and the longer 10933 bolt w washer. If your LBJs have the original attachment setup, take a look at the bolts and tell us what bolts you have on your 2001 TACO. The bolt heads are distinctive so no need to remove them for identification.

 

OK, the links really helped. I was misunderstanding what the dust boot / lbj protector was. I do NOT have these on my current ball joints and have the flanged bolts. So I am going to order the

I just went through a front suspension rebuild on my 2002 4Runner and I'm very glad I read the good posts here about the different LBJ bolts and torque specs. Everything I had researched before had 59 Ft.-Lbs torque but this is too much for the longer bolts with washers used on my 4Runner (90119-10933). Toyota needs to include information about LBJ bolt specs. with every new ball joint and warn customers about using the wrong bolts and/or torque values. It doesn't do customers much good to create a new safety issue while trying to correct another. I'm sure there are many like me who have just tightened the 90119-10933 bolts to 59 Lb-ft. and not known different bolts/specs were used depending on the year and dust boot set-up.

Here's what I ordered for my '98 Taco. I did not notice any paint or other markings on the bolt heads to know exactly the P/N or reference to any other specs though:
