In events like this, the entire chain of command are in danger. The captain will be relieved of command over a lack of confidence in leadership, the DCA will have a permanent letter in his/her jacket (at a minimum) and never advance in rank (if they can prove a case of negligence, possibly courts martial). The validity of the entire DC organization will be questioned and based on the investigation, additional charges may come. The bottom line is that a firewatch (or lack there of) did not do their job. As such, the fire started and got out of control. Even when fully manned, with a trained crew, fires aboard ships are deadly serious. The ship was at minimal manning, so even if they managed to muster a fire team, it was probably haphazard and ill trained to fight a major conflagration scenario that developed.

Wouldn't a fire of that magnitude compromise the integrity of the vessel? Thought I heard somewhere that a retired Navy firefighter said the hull was probably junk after the fire was extinguished.

Not necessarily. It depends where exactly the fire burned and how hot it got. If it gets too hot, structural members can be compromised and will need to be replaced. If you noticed, it got hot enough to melt the aluminum in the super structure in a few places. Regardless, even should they decide to rebuild her, it will take years. All the wiring runs will need to be replaced, as fire will jump compartment to compartment via those. The amount of work and money to fix this ship is going to be staggering.

I miss parts of it, good ports, crazy times. Wouldn’t do it now. Just too different for my blood.

I made it to Yokosuka with the Canadian navy, then we hit Guam for the 4th of July. Same trip saw the Missouri do a full broad side, fired everything at one time, wall of flame, pretty awesome!

Yokosuka was fun, these days I spend 3 months out of the year in Sasebo with the wife at our house that her folks left her. Kind of like a mini West-PAC.
