Missing tire change tools...

Hey all. So after the ouchie I ended up and realized the spare was flat and wore out. Went to the tire place I pass everyday... and I don't have the spare tire tool kit that enables me to change a tire.

I've rotated tires and changed brakes but "just use my tools". With no tools in the truck, we couldn't get the spare down with the one tool they had at the tire place. The "to change a tire" tools, I'll put together what works for me. I've got the jack under the jump seat behind the driver...

What do I need to get the spare to lower? I saw the "hole" and the gizmo at the end of the tunnel that needs to turn. Going to investigate more tomorrow at work ... but would appreciate if someone's got a link to the parts that work? I tried googling and looking at Amazon and it's not real clear about what I actually need - would super appreciate if someone has advice about what does or doesn't work.

Ah, ok thanks. Looks like the manufacturer doesn't realize it works on Toyotas.

 

Is it confirmed that works on 1st gens?

 

Tool posted is for spare winch only and yes it does work to lower the spare.
OP stated she would put together what works for her.

Ultimately, I'm not too worried whether it works, just need to end up with something that enables me to change a tire on the side of the road. Looks like the wrench in it is long enough I can use it and not buy something else. I've got the jack, that I know. I didn't "see" the other parts ... fairly sure they aren't in the truck but I won't rule it out when I clean up everything to stow the new kit.

Not overly. I tried searching in the "1st gen forums" and didn't see a result. There's a TON of info on later models though.

I just bought an oem set w/ jack on eBay for ~$80; there were plenty of listings around that same price.

 

Ok the Amazon kit came in. I was able to use it to lower the spare with some grumbling.


The "socket" or receptacle or receiver to lower/raise the spare is essentially a section of pipe with a square notch on it.


The flat end broke the mechanism loose but only engaged on one side. The loopy deal thing is just too wide to fit in the slots.

So I made a brick to adapt the kit's extension rods to the socket:


It's aluminum flat bar (scrap material) that's 3/8" thick and 1-1/4" wide. I milled down the sides to go into the extension (0.470" wide) and threaded it so a M5 screw locks my adapter on the extension.

The gold M6 low socket head cap screw is there to keep my bar from falling down out of the socket. It had to be countersunk to fit in the 0.700" ID of the socket. I went through the effort trying to get the process as reliable as possible assuming I'd get a flat at night. Where there's no cell service. In the rain.

Next I'll have to see if my Amazon kit needs adapting to the jack...

 

I rigged a piece of plastic pipe, inch and a half, if memory serves, that goes between the bumper and the tire carrier. It supports the tool to get it easily aligned with the slot. It can be a real pain in the dark, even with a light.

 

Anyone have a pic of the jack and kit stowed behind the seat? Mine doesn't have the original kit either and can't really tell from the owners manual how it all fits. Tried google but just found a bunch of pics of jacks outside the cab.

That helps a lot. I don't have the full set and wasn't seeing how it went.

 

I would suggest taking off the spare tire, lubricate the spare tire pulley with grease, and work the grease into the pulley a few times. Your spare tire pulley is quite rusted which caused damage to your spare tire tools. I would also file down the loop end of the spare tire tool to fit into the spare tire pulley correctly.

 

Looks like you found a solution. I bought what looks like the same set only paid $40 instead of $25... Anywho it was the first thing I did and just so happened to blow a tired only weeks later while going 80! That said, make sure you get yourself a bottle jack for when the time comes. I'll post the set I purchased as well as the bottle jack for reference. Another thing that might help you is to make sure the lug nuts you have on your wheels are compatible with your spare. Mine had a flange that wouldn't sit flush (using 2nd gen wheels with a 1st gen spare) so I had to drive very carefully to the next exit and pick up a set just for my spare.

Bottle Jack - Obviously 6 Ton is overkill but it just makes you work less hard (and is slightly taller by default which is good since I have a TRD)

 

OH WOW!!! Yeah, checked the lug nut size works first thing! I've got a jack behind the driver's seat.

Sicyota04 yours looks totally different than my 1998. Is yours a 1st gen?

Yeah... still gotta check that I can actually use my jack with my tools. Ultimately, with a new spare tire and the means to change it (without known jack) I'm quite well off compared to total flat and no way to get to it...........................
