I bought a Mercedes 240 diesel, 4 speed manual transmission in 1979. All mechanical, no turbo. Once running, no electricity was needed for any driving functions. I got about 450,000 miles out of it, no significant repairs, even still the original clutch. Got about 31 mpg on the highway and 35 mpg in local driving, slow, but not nearly as slow as the automatic versions. It never failed to get me where I was going (and back) in 22 years of ownership. I suspect nothing will ever approach that in reliability again.

I drove the the Jeep Liberty CRD for 11 years. I loved that little diesel and it did ok for fuel economy but not stellar at all. maybe 5 mpg better than the gas v6 was as it got 19-21 around town for me and 25-28 highway if you stayed around 68mph and kept the rpm mostly under 2000.
It had its issues and needed mods for longevity. However now with diesel prices so high the savings is wiped out there pretty much. with the newer ones they have DPF and particle filters that need serviced and replaced. I wouldn't want that pain. that's why I planned to buy a new vehicle it when it started to be harder to get the italian parts for the engine and someone that knew how to work on it. I wouldn't buy a new diesel with all the emissions crap on it now.

I miss fuelling up at truck stops. Getting morbidly obese truckers in their murdered out Pete 359s pulling up behind me angry that my little jetta was taking up a pump for all of 2mins.
I’d love to do that again but in a Tacoma.

DIESEL >>> REAR DISC BRAKES - FOREVER.

Here in Canada the truckers have their own filling spot away from the regular tanks out in the open. We can fill up with diesel on the same area as the gas pumps are but we use different nozzles so you can't mistake for gas or vice versa.

    I’m in Canada [Ontario].
I used to fill up at the transport pumps back in the day cause I knew the fuel was fresh and always being cycled.
Filling up with diesel at the regular pumps, especially when off the ‘beaten path’, was always sketchy. Never knew how long that stuff was sitting for.

Yes, I understand what you are saying. I buy the colored stuff for the farm tractor so it is usually pretty fresh which is in a different pump from regular Diesel.

I'm guessing middle to end of September. At least that's what I'm hoping for to get out of my Tundra and back into the Taco. Stock piling parts until I can order one and it shows up.

I used pacific pride and bought b-20/ b95 until I cooked my fuel sending unit in my 01 jetta. I had replaced the other hoses with viton. But I had two other diesel Jetta’s wagon and sedan, so many conversations late night with cops and fuel delivery drivers. This one guy would fill tanks in the back of a ram and then the trailer and deliver throughout the county, he would stop fueling and let me use a pump, he would be using like 4 hoses at once.
