I'm thinking I'll just put something like this down strategically:

haha I actually ordered these silver ones while already owning black 1 up racks. The silver on silver is the ticket :)

I would think that material would be a bit firm for this application.

Well... I guess it's okay if it's intentional. LOL!

Oh... is it a tolerance issue? I thought it was just the arms bouncing up and down on the rail.

You can fit a collection of golf balls in the back of this bad boy pretty easily

Sorry to barge in on this, digging this build though. I'm considering getting a (new) Mk7 GTI and was wondering about dealer coverage and mods, was your "special status," from being a friend of a dealership higher up? (If that's too much info I get it, just figured I'd ask) I know myself and it'll be hard to not want to do a few things, eg: a Unitronic tune, suspension, wheels. I figured I'd void warranty or at least make it very inconvenient for myself if something happened and I needed engine service and I'd voided the powertrain warranty. But then I'm left with going for an older model and I kind of like the idea of going new for once. Either way I'm sold on the VWs.

My status was kind of convoluted. The dealership I went to is the one that VW HQ uses so that helped a little. I also ran a local VW club and organized a service discount for the club. Basically I was responsible for driving a lot of business through the dealer between sales and service. It started with me befriending my salesman and snowballed from there.

The last piece of help was VW using my car as a display car for the Rallycross series they sponsored a while ago.

So yeah. I highly recommend talking to your service writer and seeing what they have to say. I was always upfront about what was done to the car.

Oh gotcha, that makes sense, and you were basically doing PR work for them so I can see how that would be beneficial. Thanks for that, I was just wondering as I'd had an old family friend when I was younger who was a dealer president and was lucky enough to have a little back scratching, though I can't imagine even that would've gone far if a huge issue was encountered. (I'm in VA too btw but down in VaBeach)
I'll certainly ask and see what the folks at VW say, it might have some bearing on which way I go, used vs new. Though their warranty seems pretty nice and its not like a stocker GTI is a slouch.

Added some chair sliders and hose I had laying around to quiet the rack down. So far so good!

Picked some used parts and promptly installed them:

CTS Turbo Inlet - took about 4 minutes, the PCV popped right off for me. Being warm probably helped

    64549A58-71E7-405A-B527-A4C858A276EA.jpg

It is a little bent from the previous owner over tightening the clamp but it still works just fine.

I also snagged an Integrated Engineering Cold Air Intake that included a SAI kit. I already ordered a silicone coolant reroute kit and a new filter. I have to do some adjusting and I might modify the shroud to work with the OEM inlet.

    87D82273-93FE-40F4-B3B2-B9051A164C3C.jpg

Secondary Air Injection hose under the tray

    0125D8BA-86C3-4694-AAD9-A2352BDE37AE.jpg

Overall throttle response is better than the OEM+ intake and man do I love turbo noises.

Springs or coilovers next along with a RSB. Then maybe wheels and I’ll call it a day :D

Forgot to Add, this is the last IE product I'll ever buy, unless I go DP since they're the only ones to make it.

I called them to order a replacement silicone hose and I was asked why, and I said I acquired one secondhand. At first, they first said they don't sell replacement parts to people who aren't the original owners, then they said they don't even sell individual parts if it's from a kit. I call BS because I placed an order on ECS 5 seconds later for the TSI Gen 3 MK7/S3 Cold Air Intake Coolant Line Add-On Kit and a replacement Filter.

    IE Sucks.

Random thought... opinion on platform hitch racks, 1up or Kuat?

I'm leaning towards an NV 2.0.

    Here's a thing I found when I googled it - https://roadbikeaction.com/bike-rack-test-kuat-nv-2-0-versus-1up-usa-heavy-duty-double/

I like the 1up better for roof racks, but it not having a lock can be annoying.

Kuat is cool, but if I had to choose a new hitch rack I'd go Thule T2 classic. It's a simple and easy design, tons of locks and it's cheaper than the other 2 you mentioned.

Also the parts to rebuild are cheap af

I like the Thule racks too, but I need to be able to hold up to four bikes. Which sucks because I carry Thule.

I have a bunch of roof mounted racks floating around because we always put our bikes on our roofs, but not on the truck.
