Anybody ever do something for someone to prove a point?

My neighbor who lives across the street in a half million dollar house is one of those people who wants you to do something but doesn’t trust you do it, people like that drive me nuts. Tell me what you want and I’ll make it happen.

He brings this square tubing in yesterday and says “can you cut this for me? It’s aluminum”. I said “it is aluminum, and it’s 2” square, 3/16” wall 6061-T6”.

The look on his face was priceless, he said “how do you know that from looking at it?” I said “I’m not as stupid as you think I am”.

I could have sawed it and filed it but I sawed it and milled it just so he knows I’m capable :D

He also told me he cleaned it for me so I hit it on the polishing belt for him

My buddy was building a house several years ago and I was helping him with the shingles; his dad (who never worked a day in his life) was sitting in a lawn chair 'supervising'. He kept pointing out things like "move that to the left" or "put another nail in it". So after about the third comment, I threw my hammer down (in his general direction), told him he could get his lazy ass up there and finish, and went home.

Random baby deer running across the parking lot. In 26 years this is the 3rd deer I’ve seen here. We are in the city o_O

:facepalm:now he'll want the other 10 pieces polished to match.
    Good morning crew.
Creed, I've gone straight to a dealer for a key, and they had one available right there on the spot. It was really nice of them or I should say they were very helpful. Camper shell place, don't recall the name. What I'm saying is you might have to swing by there and ask.

This is the same guy who I welded his spare tire carrier on his trailer last year and when he came to pick it up he oiled the lock on our gate. I don't oil it because my kids have trouble getting it open and I liked it that way.

I'll check the local LEER dealer soon and see if they can help!

I got to get busy, get this shift cable in, then have evening time set up a coworker is going to TIG weld a pan of sorts for me. A piece that goes on Corvette, holds fan shroud that I won't be using but it looks like a splash shield of sorts too.
    Have a safe day everyone

Not trying to tell you what to do, just trying to help......you need to put a center in the end of that shaft with a center drill and put the tailstock in it so it reduces chatter and also doesn't flex. The shaft will measure smaller near the chuck and bigger away from it because it's pushing away. Here's a photo I found on the web of what I'm talking about

For me "high end furniture" means it came from a yard sale in a good part of town. ;)

Thanks! We'll have to dig through the pile of bits/tooling and parts scattered around the lathe to try and find those things.

Edit: the shaft is being turned down to make a pin for a loader cylinder. It's going to get pounded in with a sledge so we're not super concerned with the overall accuracy. But definitely good to know for later projects!

3.5 times the diameter sticking out of chuck without a support. Just a general rule.....
At a shop where I worked years ago a toolmaker was making several pieces from a piece of long bar stock. Out past the lathe a ways there was a tube support for the end sticking out, he would have to move that support closer as he used the bar up. He put a new bar in there and didn't move that support back out. Turned on the lathe and it whipped around, bent at 90 deg pretty much and put a large V shape in his Kennedy tool box. I'd say it was about 6" tall in the middle of the box where it hit, approximately 20" on the sides.

I did that with a 7/8" rod, it bent around and dented my bosses hood on his mower :anonymous:

I'm pretty sure that high end stuff just means you need impact allens:rolleyes:.

My best buddy's wifes family is in the high end furniture business and the old man once told me- luxury items have luxury margins.
