i'll be glad to lecture you all day long on speeding

i dont condone it and i rarely do it

    :D

i've avoided posting in this thread for a bit...it seems ya'll have pretty much said what needed to be said...

    drunk driving = BAD
i do however applaud the guy for manning up and admitting his mistake...i hope he learns his lesson

i've personally lost a friend via DRT in a single vehicle DUI and saw another friend go to jail for a long time because of a DUI...

the friend in jail flipped his accord end over something in the neighborhood of 6 times...his front seat passenger wasnt wearing her seatbelt and was partially ejected through the sunroof...as you can imagine...she was also DRT...because the driver was speeding and dui...he's now serving time for involuntary manslaughter

    please dont drink and drive...

I've been reading this tread cause the OP lives in the same town as me, I don't want to be his victim, but I been trying to think of something I have ever done to endanger a life. I'm far from perfect, but I can't think of anything I have purposely done that would endanger another persons life. I do drive with traffic and if the flow of traffic is faster than the speed limit then I guess I'm speeding, but if everyone is driving the same speed I'm not endangering them or myself. I also have been through 'EVOC-emergency vehicle operations course' with the PD, so I might have a slightly better chance of avoiding or causing an accident and I've never been in one. I have never driven drunk, I hardly drink and when I do I'm usually in the middle of the sand dunes around a fire. Do I take risks with my life more than most people do in their normal day to day life, I guess I do since I choose to enjoy riding my quad in the dunes where people are hurt/killed all the time and I had chosen law enforcement as a career even though I'm not longer out on the streets. You seem adamant that people put other at risk all the time, so maybe I am just missing something obvious.

 Yup everyone makes mistakes, but some mistakes are much worse than others.

But, I am 'young' under 30, so I could disagree with your assumption, but I happen to agree with it. I personally think I have been through more in my life than the average 20-30 year old and I am disappointed in the views of most people my age. I have also spent my entire working life in a career where I was usually the youngest, so I tend to have the views of someone older than my age which might be why I'm with someone 13 years older than me. I don't know the age of the OP, but I assume he is under or around 30.

The worst part is that it's all ranks (Officer and Enlisted) and the services know there is a problem...

We had a Thanksgiving Safety Standdown...and the command acknowledged that someone from our unit would not make it back without a DUI or some sort of career changing injury. And that several more would be lost before the holidays were over.

And judging by the dialogue here-neither do the MEMBERS! My Uncle Joe was an anesthesiologist and an alcoholic. He became an alcoholic very young. My dad's very first car was a 1952 Hudson Hornet...brand new. He only had it for 8 months when Uncle Joe unknowingly borrowed it and totalled it because he was drunk. Uncle Joe bought one of the very first Chevy Vega's to come off the assembly line in 1971...a neat gold with black racing stripes. Only had it a few days when he ROLLED it and totalled that one too! I heard subsequent stories from my cousins about being terrified on car trips and finding the stashed bottle of hooch under ths driver seat. It is nothing short of MIRACULOUS that my uncle didn't KILL someone on the highways OR in the operating room....pure luck for sure. I was lucky enough to have a shining example of what NOT to do behind the wheel of a 4000 lb projectile within my own family-matter of fact I never picked up drinking at all. My mantra all these years is this; go outside and try to push your tacoma 50 feet and tell me how you do. An effortless tap of the big toe on the throttle, an easy twist of the wheel with one finger, and 4000lbs is instantly rolling a hellofa lot faster than you can ever run-or even pedal a bike! a slight depression of the brake with that same big toe will bring all 4000lbs to a halt. Power equipment already removes all sense of what dynamics are really in motion here...driving DRUNK pretty much removes the driver himself altogether. Period. All you have left is a blurry eye sleeepily attempting to stay between lines as a matter of survival! My .02-thanks

    Never said I was perfect.

I make plenty of mistakes. You want a list?

My mistakes never involve putting someone else's life in danger.

We once had a LtCol give us a safety brief when I was in the Corps... That same weekend - he wrecked his harley because he was drinking....

We should all set the example for everyone else....

I don't know why I feel the need to divulge the information, but I do. I got a DUI about 10 years ago. As the police put it, "the driver(me) failed to negotiate a straight stretch of road." There were no other vehicles involved and fortunately, I put my car in a ditch before I got to the traffic light that was 1/4 mile ahead. 4-5 hours after I had stopped drinking, I still had a BAC of .27 (almost 3 times the legal limit at the time). I don't remember leaving the party or driving, I was that drunk.
I paid and I learned and out of sheer luck, nobody got injured or killed.

Questions for the OP: Were you drinking by yourself? Were you out with friends?

Friends don't let friends drive drunk. I spent too many years of my youth with people that weren't really my friends.

    exactly.

For the 5 years Ive live in Statesboro (little college town) I am always the one taking peoples keys and fussing at people. Some people think its funny, some think Im going overboard. People just dont get it.

The two main roads in Statesboro (GA Avenue and Lanier Dr) have the 2 highest DUI rates in the whole state of GA. Yes, even higher than any one street in Atlanta. The cops just sit in one little parking lot on the corner of these 2 streets and pull people over left and right. You would think people would get the hint that they're not going to get away with it....

I live right across the intersection from where the cops sit (Lanier Dr deadends/ T's into Ga Avenue) and about a month ago a guy ran the readlight, ran into my yard and hit a tree right next to my house. Needless to say the cops were there within seconds. Guy couldn't even stand, when they dragged him out the truck beer cans fell all over the ground... IDIOT

I was with friends, one was not around when I decided to be stupid and drive, the other was and even encouraged it, I was getting smokes for him...needless to say,he is no longer my friend and I will never drink and drive again. Thanks to all opinions on the site..I have learned my lesson and fortunately no one else was involved in this accident.
