Noticed it came with a 90915-20005 oil filter and the dealership does not carry those and sold me a USA made 90915-yzzg2. After comparing the 2 there are significant differences. Noticed the word Denso was not on the American filter and the housing had more ridges. Found an old D1 and use that one instead. Which is the best filter for my new truck? They say the G2 supersedes the D3 but I think it’s a marketing ploy by Toyota USA to discourage people from changing their own oil. You have to have a different tool for the g2. I’m going to stick with the Denso brand d1 or d3 but which is the best option. I don’t haul or tow, it’s just a big shiny 4x4 tool for just in case scenarios.

I researched this when I bought my 2015.

The dealer during the 'Toyota Care' period used the G2. I bought enough to get me through the warranty period then switched to the WIX 51348.

The G2 is contract made by Purolator. It's a decent filter with a nice heavy can that won't fail when removing it should it end up being a bit tight. The pictures of them cut open (on BITOG) look fine. It's a treated cellulose media, and it has a good gasket. Filtering efficiency is almost certainly better (by a considerable margin) than the Denso Thai, which while well constructed are not good filters at actually filtering.

My criteria is that an oil filter should have good heavy construction as a first priority. I do 5K mile changes, so capacity is secondary. I'd prefer the filter actually be efficient and since I'm going to the expense and bother of replacing it I'd like a good one. My choices would be the WIX 51348, the Mobil 1 102A, or the Purolator Boss 10241. All will perform better than a Denso Thai.

That said, these engines don't make a lot of particulate matter to remove.

I prefer the D1. Did alot of research and that in my opinion was the best filter for my 2016 2.7. I order half a dozen at a time on Amazon. 140k and no issues.

I will stick with oem;… I thought the g2 seemed to be along the purolator lines based on the oval shaped holes. Owned an 06 that I recently sold w/ 104,000 miles with the 2.7 and always used the d1. Was just curious if something had changed in the past 15 years with these engines besides the 0/20 full synthetic from the factory from the start. Just moved to Michigan and hear they use a lot of salt and sand and I want the best filtration as possible for a brand new engine.
