the pump doesn’t run with the engine running, but if the evap canister senses positive pressure it will open the purge VSV to get rid of any fumes which are sent to the intake. With the cap off I don’t see how the purse VSV would be called to energize, so should not be an issue.

Another scenario: The person driving wasn't familiar with the vehicle and was a little road weary & either didn't notice the display or just wanted to get home without delay.

    Update.
In the morning I looked very closely at the truck for scuff marks and think I saw some very faint ones on the fender flares. They were hard to see because I have the off-road ones. So I decided the most likely scenario was leaving the gas cap off. After a lot of unnecessary build up and talking myself in and out of my next step, I finally made the decision to act like a rational sane person and just drive the damn truck. I drove it about 10 miles yesterday and *knock on wood* so far so good. Thanks all for the suggestions!

Exactly. Music super loud, it was dark, blah blah blah.

Perfect example of nobody caring to pay attention to anything anymore.

    Yeah.
My daughter lost the one on our '06 4Runner and the CEL did not immediately go off, took a few trips/cycles. As a note, the cheap Amazon replacements that appear to be OEM did not fix it. I went to the dealer and got one and it worked.

Hoping for the best... (have you fired your driver?)

Please note that this board revels in unnecessary build-up, speculation, paranoia, conspiracy, and the propagation of outright delusions. Your decision to act like a rational person is a buzzkill for all involved and we are disappointed to see you've come to your senses in a scant 3 pages worth of posts... Typically, such a topic could have ben good for at least 25 pages

Just the same, we are delighted to have added confusion, stress, distraction, derailment, and generally have been of no help at all to you throughout this ordeal.

We hope to do better next time - we will endeavour to at least add sufficient confusion to take the topic to at least a dozen pages!

    :)

The MIL will not illuminate until your 2nd trip. So if there's a pending code, it may help indicate what happened.

    There ya go.
It’s not gonna beat the hell of your truck by the way as some have pointed out and as you’ve demonstrated, tethers too short. Likely happens from time to time, you just go “duh”, put the cap back on and send it! :D

lmao well said! The criticisms (“the check engine light lol” um, she had no light come on), cap banging on your truck loud enough to wake the dead nonsense, not considering it was dark when she drove, just some outstandingly comedic replies. You really have to filter half the comments on TW and the rest you need to verify yourself lol.

I no longer can find the 15504 either. This one may work. I tried a Duralast locking cap before my 15504 and the Duralast kept throwing a CEL light so I can only speak of my experience with the 15504. The Duralast fit but probably was not venting properly.

I am going to revise my prior post, I fueled up today and thought about this while doing so. I left the gas cap off after fillup and closed the door. Like cap not even on. Drove to my next stop about 3 miles away and NOTHING. No lights or warnings on dash or head unit...

So, I left it off and drove home about 15 miles total. No lights or warnings at all. Which is bizarre because I had a fuel cap light come on prior after fill up and the cap was not on fully or something and kept getting the fuel cap light and warning...

I guess You can drive with the fuel cap off and it will not show a warning, at least for a little while

TW investigator status good work. But didn’t it beat up the whole side of the truck? And all that banging? jk :D
I did this years ago accidentally. i put the cap back on and the world as we know it was not affected at all.
