Does this pass the new CARB requirements for smog? Can they see it at all?

If you’re referring to the new CA laws about tunes, I’ve seen members here get smog checks since this went into effect and the tune is not detected.

it also depends on mileage. Your mileage will typically improve up to about 15-20k miles. Brand new engines don’t get anywhere near the epa mileage estimates.

Which KDMax tune is liked by most Auto with 5.29 + 33s (Regular/LT/SLT or WTp)?

I know that the regular fuel KDMax tune will learn up to 90 octane and advance timing accordingly. How does it do this and how long does it take? Is there something that can be done to accelerate this learning such as a couple of full throttle runs?

The octane learning is based on monitoring Knock feedback and "learning" stars within 5 minutes of your drive and never stops.
The ignition is being retarded if KFB starts diving below -3.5. The "learning" can be seen in action if you drive in 6th between 1700-2000 RPMs, where KCLV can swing by 5 or more points in 3-5 minutes

What affect does running a higher octance have on performance for gas MPG if any affect?

I'll comment on this because my experience & concerns were similar. I was/am new to Tacoma's (2021 TRD OR) and didn't really know about the shortcomings of the stock tune, or anything about the tuning world until I stumbled upon this site after getting the truck. I started to notice the crappy shifting, bogging down, racing to get to 6th gear, etc. The more I drove, and the more I read, the more determined I was to fix it via some sort of tuning.

At the time, there was no local tuning option in the Phoenix area. I was heading over to SoCal and reached out to TWTaco about getting it done while I was there, and he was super helpful and answered all of my questions. But, in short, I got cold feet because of the "what if" something went wrong, what of I needed to go back to stock, what if my truck shit the bed, etc. I didn't get it done at that point for that reason only, the lack of local support or someone to help me if I had an issue.

Eventually I hooked up locally with @Edge48 and got the OVTune, which I was super disappointed in. Luckily, after some time Eddie started offering KDMax and I had him flash it. Holy Shit, I should have done this right from the start! Over the next couple of times we hooked up and changed tunes, throttle, etc. I felt so much better having a responsive local guy to handle my flashing needs, and knew I'd have support if I needed it.

Fast forward to today, and now I have my own VF Tuner software and cable, a laptop I picked up fairly cheap for doing doing this exclusively (any laptop will work, I just had the option to buy a recycled one from my work for $100), all the tunes I need and the knowledge and ability to do it myself. Eddie also helped me get up and running with TechStream so I can do ECU updates and various other adjustments as needed. I have the Valley Runner files as well as OVTune in addition to KDM at my disposal, but to be honest the KDMax 7.0 w/ SLT throttle is the best I have used thus far. But now, I can experiment on my own and talk to others about it. (But to be clear, I do not have any interest in tuning others' trucks whatsoever, just handing my own)

So bottom line - you can trust this tune and these guys. They really are a solid group that won't steer you wrong, whether you choose to have someone do it or do it yourself.

    Cheers!

    Eric

You may get a slight increase, but it really depends on your driving, the terrain and the configuration.
In my case, I have kclv of max 23.4 on 87 tables with 92 octane and max 24.5 on premium tables on 92.
This is a small data, but there is 1 point gain.
Need to factor in the cost of premium gas and availability

Thanks for the input. I have an appt to get mine done in a couple weeks.

It sounds like in the short term no real issues getting things adjusted, but maybe for long term it would be best to get the hardware to do things myself.

With that in mind, once you have the tune done and then later buy the hardware, do you have to buy the software again?

Also, is there a good resource for learning about the process? I've read some stuff on the OV Tune site, but not in depth. Not sure if that's all one needs or is there is more tech behind the scenes to understand.

    Thanks.

I've read that higher mileage engines might have a bit of carbon build up in the injectors that could impact the kclv learning. One recommendation I read was to run some sort of injector cleaner first.

What I'm wondering is how much of an issue is this and is there a way to know without pulling things apart if we need to do this or even if this is the right thing to do? For example, is having a low kclv before the tune indicative of a potential problem? I'm at around 60k miles and have mostly used top tier gas but 85 as that's the norm in Colorado unless you buy premium.

Not necessarily. I remember the stock kclv was between 14-17. But here is summer 2019 (July) Ovt post 1.5 "exclusive" testing version Premium gas (no octane learning bs that we got on 2.0) on 1.5 hours drive I-5 north from home to Anacortes ferry dock.

This weekend I had the chance to meet up with Paul - @TacoManOne in Butte, MT. He happened to be over from the Spokane area and a drive to Butte from Bozeman (85 miles) was much preferred to going all of the way to Spokane (400 miles). I was initially on the fence about the tune. Despite reading through the thread and all of the reviews, I was still a bit unsure. I can mod, repair, and rebuild anything mechanical, but the ECU and its secrets elude me. Paul was patient with me, answering my questions and not pressuring me into actually going through with things. Picked my dad up (his first time riding in my truck) and went over Homestake pass into Butte. '21 OR 6spd MT. I could barely hold 4th gear over the pass and dad was not impressed . I currently have about 1,000lbs of extra weight on the truck in gear/armor. That being said, after a quick 5 minutes hooked up to the tuning software, I now have a brand new truck. Even pulling out of the parking lot for a test drive was different. Went with one step below the most aggressive throttle response and it is perfect. Dad even commented on it. Said it was a completely different truck, and even apparent from the passenger seat. Leaving Butte and heading BACK over Homestake pass was a whole other experience. Easily held 6th gear. I only have about 300 miles on the tune, but so far the truck feels lighter than it did when it was stock. Gone is the V-tech feeling, gone is the poor downshift throttle response, gone is the low RPM bog down. THIS TUNE WORKS. For anyone still on the fence, I could not recommend this tune enough. I wish I would've done this sooner, but it's also cool to see how much the added weight negatively affected the truck's performance, and how much the tune helped. I'm already noticing improvements in MPG, but I'm also still driving this truck like a racecar, so I will have to report back on how much my MPG actually improves. If anyone wants more details, just message me. I can't even describe how much happier I am with the truck. Just do it.
