Why are aftermarket gauges so 1980-ish?

    The aftermarket gauges mentioned most here have displays that look like something out of the '80s movie Wargames. Why so basic?


    My Mercury VesselView Mobile app has customizable 'gauges', with several pages able to be displayed. It bluetooths from a module on the motor to my iphone.
