Between the recent chip shortage and Tacoma production stoppages, it is difficult to find up-to-date and accurate information on how and when 2022 ordering will proceed. From recent news, Tacoma production has been curbed by 40% worldwide and stopped at all US Tacoma plants. San Antonio has not stopped but is now retooling in order to continue production of the 2022 Tundra. Optimistically, the Tacoma plant in Mexico will resuscitate soon, but realistically, this is shaping up to be the end of 2021 Tacoma production, a complete halt until chip inventories and shipment times around the globe improve.

The consensus among the c. 100 dealers that I have contacted this week is that they are in a new limbo - a limbo that has them creating their own responses to potential customers. My local dealer (whom I've trusted for the past ten years) has said that a factory order for a 2021 Tacoma will be delayed 3-6 months. It's a nonsensical guess because the 2022's will need to begin production very, very soon. I believe that if you want a 2021, you must make large compromises with the existing inventories.

Make a factory order for a 2022 Tacoma? When does that begin? And with parts shortages, does anybody want to take a guess on order-to-delivery time? This entire situation will be dynamic at best, so you folks waiting for your factory order should be patient. I know that's lifeless advice, but we've never lived like this before. Does anybody outside the Toyota Board of Directors' room know anything for certain?

The search function will help you find threads on the 2022 talk and the wait and everything else you’ve mentioned.

Obviously the dealer you trusted didn’t tell you that your not ordering anything from the factory. There is no custom order. It is an allocation that they try and get from whatever region you are in that meets what you want for options but not a guarantee. They release what vehicles they have in the pipeline for your area and then dealers will try and allocate off that list. But yes it can be a very very long wait and must have patience. The 2021 is still in production and can still build them through Toyota’s website. So whenever the 2022 is released through there you should be able to get more insight.

When Toyota posts the 2022 configurator on it's site you can order it.

Nope and they don't know either. Its the whole supply chain man, not just Toyota and chips. It's oil, it's iron ore, it's steel... pretty much everything is screwed up.
However, I will venture a guess... June 2023 is when we get back to whatever a new normal is. This is what the economists I am listening to are saying and I get paid to listen.

It is disruption in "just in time policies" . Now I wonder how many just in time people are looking at the old school just in case themes lol. Looks like new vehicles will stay high priced for longer . If not already bought , buy auto parts , and tool companies stocks that supply DIYers , and repair shops .

lol global supply chain does not pay attention to politics. Global supply has no leader either. If you can imagine, say, a multi billion dollar company in Sri Lanka (little island off of India) having to depend on a small town in western North Carolina for their success, then you understand the global supply chain. ANY problems with it (and it now has many) will cause problems for the whole globe, not just the USA. They are having problems getting iron ore in Germany. That is causing problems for the company whom I work here in the states. So, the leaders really mean nothing. It's simply supply and demand.

Not really, as companies that have had a large inventory of components are why we have made it this far. For example, Toyota was able to continue production for several months past their competitors because they had a large stockpile of computer chips because of what happened in Japan several years ago.

This chip issue changed my mind on the '22 OR. Went to dealer to order '22, checking off options, rep went to back, brought a sheet which showed an allotment to the dealer, almost exactly what we were after on a '22. He was talking about order and time to deliver on 22's. Because of what is going on, we decided to get the '21, no regrets. Made healthy deposit, signed off, took 11 weeks, in my garage now.

Am I correct or not? Folks should have a candid idea of what goes on behind the scenes of a dealership and the dealer likes to keep the veil over it. Seems as if dealerships sell cars from their allocations only. The 'factory order' concept exists only in cyberspace. Apparently, dealer allocations can be similar to the wants of the customer but will require concessions in order to reach a deal acceptable to both parties. The larger dealerships are allocated a larger assortment of cars and have a better chance of pleasing the customer.

So refreshing to see someone know what they are talking about when it comes to "ordering" a Tacoma.

Too many threads where posters state they just factory ordered this, factory ordered that, when that is not how it works. The explanation quoted above is spot on. You are not ordering anything, you are at best customizing a dealers existing allotment.

Just a heads up. I was looking at the Toyota Canada website this am. 2022 4runner pricing is available.

    Base is up $1050
TRD off rd is up $2220

Not sure if that will translate exactly to Tacos

    But brace yourself!

Ordered....or should I say got in line.....for a PRO M/T earlier this week. Dealer said to expect it around Easter, no problem, I'm not in a hurry. Told me that he would call when they had the final paperwork for 2022 to reconfirm options, etc. He expected that to be around November, but no guarantees. Now I patiently play the waiting game.

If only they made a “limited chip” edition. Crank windows, turn key ignition, manual door locks, manual transmission, no LDA, BSM and TSS?

    Yup sounds about right.

Also back in Mar/Apr on Toyota Canada they upped the TRD OR by $500. But lowered financing from 4.29% to 3.79% so that came out about equal

    The numbers are always moving.
