One thing that hasn't been mentioned is that the computer adjusts shift points based on your driving style. It spent 5k miles adjusting to the driving habits of the previous owner. I'm assuming there's a way to reset this "learning" to zero, but it will still take time to adjust accordingly.

That said, this is a common complaint and as you can see a ton of people are suggesting tunes. The market is up so if you're not willing to put in the time and/or money, I would definitely find something you know you're happy with and make it happen.

    Good luck!

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
OP never said that it was Used when purchased. What was said was: "It's a 2021 Sport with around 5k miles on it. I've had it for two months and it's been back to the dealer twice so far."
Purchasing new and accumulating 5K miles in 2 months is not unusual.
EDIT: I never saw the post where OP said he bought it Used.

Not sure if your issue is the brakes, or its the converter of the transmission. I had a very slight vibration in mine when i came to a stop...slipping the truck in neutral, and braking it, the vibration was gone. As far as the wrong gear...just use the D mode till the truck learns your driving habits. Its what i did, and the transmission now is perfect choosing the right gear all the time to be in. These transmissions are so smooth compared to my gen1 tundra.
Granted it seems these tacoma's are not tuned all the same. Some run near perfect, while other owners have issues. Its possible you have a stubborn one.

I think you're right. Trade it. I've found since joining this site that about 70% of the folks that buy the Tacoma have some sort of issue with their truck that seems to be just "the way the truck is". Everything from the 1/32" gap problem at the taillight, to the crankshaft delete issue in the forest. It will never get better because when you laid down the money, you expected more and this truck will not deliver.
    I love my truck. It's a little truck and does wonders for me but;
    It's under powered
    Won't tow what I want
    Get's shitty gas mileage
    Horrible brakes
    Horrible radio
But...............I still love it and accept it will never get better. It's going to suck until I trade it for a .............real truck...LMAO

You can definitely get the learned values reset, but it makes for a rough 50ish miles. I imagine it as driving a model T, it's chug a lug until it realizes that it needs gas to run correctly again.

I've done it a few times after updating TSBs or changing tunes. It sucks ass for the break in period, but is totally worth it for the tune

Similar issues with my 18 sport I bought two months ago. I threw on new pads and rotors from napa and the braking issue went away. Lifted and 33's on it now getting front and rear gears next week at ECGS while wife and I head to the beach. If you don't like it don't dump a ton of money into it for sure. Great market for these trucks at the moment and shop around if your going to sell. Can't find any in East TN for under 50k new it seems. If you go tune route let me know which you get as I'm going to need a tune soon as well. Good luck !

5k miles. Fuck that!! You got a very very very rare lemon. This is not normal. I’d go back and talk to sales and service manager and say I want to trade over even Steven for a new one or one with similar miles and test drive it. Don’t take no for an answer. If they give you shit then make a scene. Start telling all customers that are within your voice what you’ve been dealing with what you’re going through and they’re not willing to treat you fair go onto yelp go onto Google contact the owner and tell him what you’re going through tell him you want to give Toyota another chance just give me another truck that’s all I’m asking 5000 miles is still new I shouldn’t have these problems show me another truck with the same miles is mine that has the same issues I’m having and I’ll except it as normal. I am a very nice guy but I’m also a big fucking headache and a bigger asshole when people are taking advantage of me and trying to brush me off when I have a legitimate concerns. No shaking vibrations or anything is normal accelerating or braking the shifting and hunting for gears unfortunately is somewhat normal it’s something you get used to and you just learn to play with the throttle a little bit not that big a deal the other stuff is bullshit anyone on here who doesn’t side with you and tells you different doesn’t really give a shit we should all be on your side and nobody here will say the vibrations with breaking an acceleration or normal with a brand fucking new truck

Also the resale value is freaking ridiculous with these trucks it’s pretty much worth exactly what you paid for it when it was new even with 5000 miles tell him you want to fucking trade it in and maybe you might have to eat $1000 or so but you could really trade it in and almost breakeven and get another one I would really give Tacoma another chance I’m not a fan boy these are just awesome trucks are the best looking in the most reliable out there despite what you’re dealing with. I had a bad taste in my mouth with my 2014 accord I had electrical issues at 1000 miles my doors kept locking and unlocking while I was driving my water pump and tensioner bearings went out at 30,000 miles and I’ve been a Honda fan for years all my Hondas went to 400,000 miles it happens and it pretty much steered me away from Honda unfortunately because the newer ones made in Mexico and my older ones were made in Japan same thing with my fucking Tacoma mine was made in Mexico but knock on wood it’s got 60,000 miles on it and runs excellent with zero problems

I think the factory drums in the back just suck and need to break in. I noticed my new 2020 would vibrate pretty bad at first but went away after about 5k miles. All that said this is a truck and not a sports car. But hey if you don't like it and can swing it financially then get something else. Being said I paid about 32.5k for my truck brand new right before covid. I couldn't imagine paying nearly 50k for the same thing.

Stuff that costs more than my wife thinks.
My thoughts here are that it was a lease truck, and someone just drove it into the ground while they had the chance.

Regardless +1 to getting what you want, and also +1 to spending less than 1% of your sticker price to improve your overall satisfaction of the truck, when depreciation will probably take plenty more.

    Good luck!

Yuck. Glad I will never have to worry about this.
Yes. Go be an ass if you don't get your way on the vehicle you bought used (probably) as-is. Excellent advice.
I got my truck with 0 miles and have had 0 vibration anywhere so far in nearly 10k.

They sure do. But they do need a couple mods to make them almost perfect.

My ‘21 Sport has none of the issues you mention.
Those problems suck , especially when there doesn’t seem to be a direct road to eliminating them yet. I mean I wouldn’t give up so easily but now is the time to sell it. This is my 5th Tacoma and can tell you nuisance problems like you have aren’t the norm . But they do happen.
