Amsoil website didn’t show a compatible oil for the transfer case. I called to ask and they didn’t recommend 75w90 for the transfer case. Claimed it wasn’t compatible. I know a lot of TW post say otherwise. Since this is something that’s done so rarely I’ll probably stick to the OEM 75w for the transfer case and use the Amsoil for the differentials. I know the OEM transfer case oil is expensive ($50+/liter), but it’s an extra $30 spent over several years of use. Although I doubt 75w90 would cause much harm, to me it’s not worth saving a few bucks. YMMV

I plan to change the oil in the front and rear diff's as well as the T-Case this weekend.

This may be a dumb question but this is the first truck I have ever had with the rear locker... Does that need the LS additive? Probably not I assume but want to be sure.

Also, I could not find any of the special 75W Toyota Transfer Case oil locally, not even at the dealerships. The parts guys at each of the 3 dealerships I called said to just use 75W-90 synthetic. Is that good or bad advice?

    Thanks!

For what it's worth, I went with AMSoil 75w90. I didn't do anything special for the rear locker (I have the TRD Off Road). It's to my knowledge any 75w90 will suffice.

Made the mistake of letting the dealership change out the front/rear diffs & transfer case (mainly for them to free-up the factory plugs for the first time) and the #$&%^# charged me for 11 qts when it takes around 6. I asked the service manager about it and his answer... "well, sometimes they take more." Needless to say they'll never see my truck again.

pay with a credit card, initiate a chargeback. you have an invoice showing what vehicle was serviced, what you were charged for, and a manual stating capacities.

    That's bad advice...

The diffs spec GL5 fluid, while the t-case spec is GL4. GL5 doesn't play nice with yellow metals. Are you going to hurt the t-case by using GL5? Maybe, maybe not...but for me, it's a risk I'm not willing to take, especially with how I use my truck.

Red Line MT-LV and Ravenol are readily available options that meet spec.

I absolutely agree. I am not comfortable with that risk either. I plan to have this truck a long time. I plan to order some of the Toyota stuff for the T-Case. I will use Mobil 1 in the front and rear diff's.

Redline is very good stuff, with a very good additives package. Ravenol is crap.

The UOA's i've seen on BITOG are really subpar for Ravenol.

Wasn't recommending it, per se...just mentioning it as an option. Folks can do their own due diligence...

That said, I'd use a subar fluid before I'd use the wrong fluid :crapstorm:

Should I get any additives for my TRD Off Road with the rear locker? Purchased 6qts of AMSoil 75w90 severe gear to do front and rear diffs.

You don't need any. I swapped my fluids with amsoil recently and 6 quarts does the trick just fine. Also swapped my tranny fluid out with redline mt90 and it shifts even smoother now!

Did you like this gear oil? Why doesn’t it say GL-5 anywhere on the package? Also, did you have to use a hose for the front or where you able to get the bag up there?
