Does this Carrier Bearing Look Bad?

    I've been cleaning up my undercarriage and doing maintenance. I was inspecting my drive shaft, and noticed my carrier bearing looks like it could be bad.. The shaft is not centered.. It's sitting low in the CB housing.. Like the bottom rubber is compressed or collapsed. And, it's loose.. I can push it up at least 1/2 an inch, w/out any force.. Only the weight of the shaft. Basically, I don't feel any rubber support when wiggling it around about 1/2" or maybe more.

    Otherwise, the rubber is there and not cracked..

    I'll attach a pic.. Not sure if it will help, but I think it's good enough to see the shaft is sitting low, in the CB housing.

    Grab the shaft and wiggle it. If you see excessive up and down movement then yes it's bad.

    Based on how garbage the OE carrier bearings are known to be I would say without actually checking it that it is bad.

    EDIT: Wow. Either you edited your post or I just totally skimmed off the top. Yes it's bad. There is too much play in it for sure. Replace the SOB with something better.

    The question is, are you 4x4 or a prerunner.

    If 4x4 you have options for stiffer better longer lasting units. if prerunner you gotta stick with the floppy doughnut as there is no slip joint, only a slip yoke allll the way at the transfer case.

    Lifted. Well, see my pic.. It's not exactly a stock truck anymore :). I don't know the hight of the lift, but it's OME coilovers, and a custom leaf spring pack in back for the lift and weight of the camper..

    Does my bearing look bad to you?

    And.... w/ 110k miles, if taking the shaft off to replace the bearing, would you do other maintenance like replacing the U joints?

    I've read a few threads and this is right on the line of what I am capable of doing, I think.. I don't really have special tools. I think the bearing I could do, but maybe not the u-joints...
    I noticed at the first U joint, where it comes out of the transmission, the chassis above it looks wet.. Like maybe that joint has been spraying out its grease or something. But, it otherwise looks fine.


    Edit, either you edited while I was writing, or I badly skimmed the first time too, hah.. But thanks.. Yeah, I think that CB is bad, too.

    Just get a IEDLS polyurethane bearing and be done with it. It will require making a plate and spacing out your carrier bearing down or up depending on your lift, but it's so worth it. I did mine over 5 years ago. I beat it to hell almost everyday and it's still going strong. And if it ever fails I have one on the reserve as a replacement.

    Replace the U joints. You'll be in there so why not. Some grease slinging is normal if the joint is properly greased. The shaft spins at such a high rate of speed that any excess will get flung off.
