Last winter, after my son was born, I set out to find a longbed tacoma to build out as a camper. It took many hours of forum browsing and YouTube watching, but I finally came across a workable build. It took about 3 months to find a 6ft TRD OR within the surrounding states, another 2 months to wait for the truck cap to be delivered and a few weeks of woodworking, but it all came together. Let me know what you think.

Pretty cool, where did you get that platform for your truck bed?

I made it out of 3/4 inch plywood. 2 sides covering the wheel wells and a removable board across the center. Here is a photo with the boards removed.

I see posts like this and get jealous of people who are short enough to sleep with the tailgate up... I've got to hang a red flag off my feet or the cops will write a ticket.

Have fun dude, great setup for the family!

Ha! I knew being on the shorter side would come in handy one day.

Sweet build! Is that an electrical setup on the right?

Looks pretty sweet and well made to me! A little different setup than you see on here frequently. Just hope the center boards don’t collapse in the middle of the night. I imagine you’ve given it a trial run though. Nice work! Are those cup holders?

Yes. It has 12v and USB charging ports, led lights with a dimmer switch and reading lamps. Everything is attached to a fuse block and marine switch that can be switched from the car battery to a goal zero solar battery.

Complete with cup holders. The whole build is snug and the center boards are 12 ply 3/4" plywood. It would take a lot for them to collapse. I've spent a few nights in it so far. It is pretty cozy. I sort of wish I got the higher canopy for more head room or to sit upright.
